What is this... "Symphony of Stories"

This year the BOOK WEEK theme embraces the idea that a symphony is many elements coming together to form a whole. For example, the many instruments in an orchestra coming together to play a wonderful piece of music.

As in Briony Stewart's poster, she has illustrated strange and colourful creatures playing equally strange and wonderful instruments.

In the case of a story, the many elements an author may use to create a fantastic story, such as the illustrations, plot, character development, setting, language conventions - similes, metaphors, alliteration, etc, all combine to form one great, unforgettable story.

WHAT"S ON IN BOOK WEEK

There will be a few fun competitions related to the BOOK WEEK texts for students to participate in.

Tie-your shoelaces competition
Make an origami folded frog and enter it into the frog jumping competition.
Guess how many frogs are in the jar.

DATES TO NOTE:

BOOK WEEK: 24th to 28th Aug

BOOK FAIR DAYS: 25th, 26th, 27th Aug 10:45 am to 2.30 pm each day.

BOOK WEEK BOOK PARADE: Friday 28 Aug - 2 pm Holy Family Courtyard.

In these last few weeks I have been having interesting chats with the students around the BOOK WEEK CHARACTER PARADE. Some students like to offer little hints about their character but say they won't reveal till the parade, where as other students are literally "busting" as one child exclaimed to tell me all about it.

Here is my costume reveal:

In the holidays, I decided on my favourite character and created a costume board to highlight to the students how a costume can be created for minimal expense - a total of $17, of which I can recoup by re-wearing the items on other occasions.

BOOK FAIR

Next week students will come home with the Fair brochure outlining information and payment options.

Eftpos will be available and cash will be accepted.

SO ...

Let's make this year's parade one where we consider the environment.

Let's make our focus more on creativity and less on expense, e.g. use items from home, visit the op shops, ask the neighbours and friends and make it with your family. Think less pre-made or online-ordered items, and hopefully less landfill.

Think about headwear that allows your child's face to be seen.

Inflatable costumes make this difficult and are also unsafe for our students to negotiate stairs. Please choose another option for the parade.

2026 FOCUS

Thank you, parents, for assisting your child in remembering their grade library day.

Borrowing rates are strong. With every child in the primary sector having 1 or more books in their tub for DEAR - Drop Everything And Read, and every child in K, 1 and 2 presenting with a library bag in the beginning weeks of school.

Let's keep this momentum going, building strong habits around reading for learning and enjoyment.

PREMIER'S READING CHALLENGE

Congratulations to 368 students who have completed the Premier's Reading Challenge. We are now over the halfway point of our student population.

All students who have completed the Challenge have their name featured on a soccer ball on the trees.

The aim of the Challenge is to promote a love of literature for enjoyment and to encourage wide reading amongst the students.

Sora - get free ebooks and audiobooks from your school.

Step 1: Install Sora app from Apple App Store or Google Play Store, or soraapp.com.

Step 2: When in Sora, click on CONTINUE then I have a setup code.

(Do not click on “Find My School”)

Step 3: The “setup” code is cenetau

Step 4: Click on ACEN (the top bar), click again.

Step 5:Student signs in with school username and password.

Student may then EXPLORE all the options eg ebooks and audio books available.

Select Open book or Open audiobook to read or listen to the book.
Select Options to renew or return the book, see your notes and highlights, and more.
