Class 7 students at Alice Springs Steiner School have recently embarked on an exciting journey through the world of Acoustics, Optics and Warmth. This main lesson invites students to explore the physical world through careful observation, experimentation and an increasing appreciation of the laws and relationships that shape our everyday experience.

Our journey began with sound. Students explored the question: Why do things have a sound? Through practical experiments and observation, they discovered that sound is produced by vibration and travels through a medium as waves. They investigated pitch, volume and resonance, developing an understanding of how vibrations can be generated, transmitted and perceived. What begins as the simple experience of hearing gradually becomes an exploration of invisible waves moving through the world around us.

From sound, the class moved naturally towards light. Just as sound can be understood as a wave, light also demonstrates wave-like behaviour, opening a new realm of investigation. Students considered how we see the world and, in particular, how we perceive colour. They explored the relationship between light and colour, discovering that the colours we see depend upon the light available and the way different materials interact with it.

A particularly fascinating part of the lesson has been distinguishing between reflection and refraction. Reflection occurs when light bounces from a surface, while refraction describes the change in direction that occurs when light passes from one medium into another. Through experiments with mirrors, lenses, water and other materials, students have been able to move beyond abstract definitions and experience these phenomena directly.

The inclusion of warmth extends the students' investigations into another fundamental aspect of their physical environment. Through observation and experiment, students are encouraged to consider how warmth is experienced, transferred and perceived, connecting scientific understanding with their own embodied experience of the world.

This progression—from sound waves to light waves, from vibration to colour, and from reflection to refraction—reflects an important quality of the Class 7 curriculum: learning grows from direct experience towards increasingly precise conceptual understanding.

The next Main Lesson will bring a different dimension to the students' historical journey with Renaissance. Having travelled through significant periods and developments in human history, Class 7 will encounter an age of renewed curiosity, creativity and discovery, rounding off the historic understandings of the year while opening the door to the changing worldview of the modern age.
