Year 5/6 Team News

Hello Year 5/6 families, 

As you may have heard, 5/6 students have begun working on their major assessment for this term’s Unit of Inquiry. For this assessment they will be delivering a presentation to the class which answers the central question: What’s the difference between here and there? Students will compare Australia to a country of their choosing. The parameters around this presentation have been discussed at school.

All research is being conducted at school and students are writing their speeches during class time. Students must also make a visual aide to support their presentation, such as a slideshow, poster or brochure and this is to be done, primarily, during class time.

Students who wish to make something more creative, such as a diorama, model, video or artwork, should prepare this at home. This is not mandatory. All items will need to be at school by Friday, 11 September in preparation for presentations the following week.

Students will also have opportunities to sign up for our annual Footy Day. The 5/6's have an important role in shaping the day by helping run the morning's assembly, train and coach the 3/4 football and netball teams, conduct junior school activities, work as marshals and event coordinators, scorers, umpires and much more. It is a big job but many hands make light work, and our 5/6 students always show how wonderful a student-led event can be for our school. 

Student Voice: 

AFL

A few weeks ago, the WPS AFL 9’s team went to regional finals and played against three different teams, and we won one, drew one and lost one. We ended up coming second in our region. Big thanks to Matt E.J, for coaching us in the district season, and thanks to Monty for coaching us in the divisional and regional finals. By Lachlan and Alexi. 

Athletics

A couple of weeks ago, we had our Districts Athletic carnival.  It took place at the Newport Athletics Track and we competed against the other schools in our district. There were hurdles and races 100m, 200m, 800m and lastly our relays. The field events were, high jump, long jump, triple jump, shot put and discus. It was a really fun experience for all the schools and luckily it was a warm sunny day. We hope everyone enjoyed the District’s Carnival, and good luck to those going to Divisional! Ava F & Fifi

What's Coming up in the Classroom in Term 3:

Reading: In Week 9 and 10, students are completing text responses to Bridge to Terabithia. We are learning to cite the text and discuss author intentions. We will also be preparing for our inquiry oral presentations. 

Writing: In Week 9, students are revising how and when to use language conventions. In Week 10,  students will engage in a fun poetry activity using the tunes and history of AFL theme songs and aim to create a school song!

Numeracy: In Week 9 and 10, students will be learning about location and transformation. This includes knowledge of shape and the cartesian plane. 

Inquiry: Students will be preparing for their oral presentations. 

Willy Kids/Respectful Relationships: In Week 9 and 10, Willy Kids are positive. There will be a big focus on our preparations for Footy Day and how to be positive role models to our peers and 3/4 teams. 

Important Dates for Term 3:

- Grade 6 Student Group Photo: Friday Week 9, (Time TBC)

- Footy Day: Friday Week 10 Assembly 9:15am, 2:30pm dismissal

• Week 8- 5/6B

• Week 10- Footy Day Assembly (5/6 team and students)

Term 4 Reminders: 

A letter will be coming home during Week 9 highlighting the many dates/events coming up in Term 4. There are many things to be across and costs associated. We aim to give you as much notice as possible to support and assist with planning ahead.

Week 2: School Disco (Thurs 15th Oct, 7:30-9pm)

Week 3: Parent Info Night for 5/6 SEA Health Program (Tues 20th Oct, 6:30pm via Zoom)

Week 4: Grade 5 Camp: Mon 26th-Wed 28th October 

Week 4: Grade 6 Camp: Wed 28th-Fri 30th October
