Year 3/4 Team News

Hello Year  3/4 families,   

It’s hard to believe that we’re already nearing the end of Term 3.

We loved seeing our students’ incredible outfits at the Book Parade. The creativity and enthusiasm on display were wonderful, and it was such a lovely celebration of books, reading and the vibrant culture of Williamstown Primary School.

The Bike Education program has made for an exciting week for our Grade 4 students, who have been learning so much about bike and road safety. We were particularly pleased with the way they conducted themselves during their rides outside the school grounds. Students had the opportunity to put their learning into practice by demonstrating their understanding of road rules, safe riding behaviours and how to ride responsibly as part of a group. 

We would also like to thank our wonderful parent helpers who joined us over the four days. With your support we were able to have safe and enjoyable rides around Williamstown which the students loved.

Our Grade 3 students also enjoyed two excellent days of learning, including the opportunity to take part in some engaging STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) activities. It was wonderful to see them embracing the different experiences on offer and they especially enjoyed spending time and reconnecting with friends from previous classes.

It has been a busy and enjoyable fortnight for our Grade 3/4 students, and we look forward to making the most of the final weeks of Term 3!

Literacy

Students are continuing with our Poetry unit, reading and exploring a variety of poems and using these as mentor texts to further develop their comprehension skills.

Poetry will also continue to be the focus in Writing. Students will explore a range of poetic forms and literary devices, considering how poets use language creatively to engage their readers. They will then have the opportunity to create, refine and publish their own poems.

Numeracy – Chance and Probability

During Weeks 9 and 10, students will continue to develop their understanding of chance and probability, while also revising number facts and building their multiplication automaticity.

Students will conduct repeated chance experiments, identify and describe possible outcomes, record their results, and recognise and discuss variations in these results.

Through practical activities and everyday examples, students will also explore the language of chance. They will describe outcomes as likely or unlikely, identify events as certain or impossible, and explain the reasoning behind their predictions.

Inquiry

Our Term 3 inquiry question is:

“What does living sustainably look like in our local community?”

This fortnight, students will continue with sustainability in housing and design and create an eco-friendly house that incorporates sustainable features and ideas.

Willy Kids

This term's focus is "Willy Kids are Resilient."

Students will develop strategies for:

• managing emotions
• showing courage
• bouncing back from challenges
• persevering
• maintaining a positive mindset.

Respectful Relationships

This term, students are exploring gender norms and stereotypes. They will develop an understanding of how stereotypes in the media and literature influence beliefs about gender, while learning to recognise and challenge negative gender stereotypes within their school and wider community.

Homework

Homework provides valuable opportunities for students to consolidate their learning and develop positive habits for lifelong learning.

Homework is distributed on Monday and is due back at school each Friday.

Weekly homework includes:

• Reading – Read for at least 15 minutes on four nights each week. Students should record the titles of the books they have read on their homework sheet.
• Mathematics – Play the number games introduced in class to strengthen number sense and revise learnt skills. This term, there is also a focus on learning multiplication facts:
  • Grade 3: 2s, 4s, 5s and 10s
  • Grade 4: all multiplication tables.
• Spelling – Complete suggested activities using the words your child has selected.
• Writing – Complete a short writing task in the Homework Book.

All students have a Homework Book to complete and return each week. If you have any questions or concerns about homework, please don't hesitate to contact your child's classroom teacher.
