Year One Team News

Hello Year One families,

Our classrooms have been filled with the excitement of our upcoming Warm Water Swimming program. As this program runs for consecutive school days, there are bound to be a lot of tired students for the remainder of term. Getting enough rest will be very important for them. 

Swimming

Thanks to all the parent volunteers who have signed up. Please ensure the office has sighted your Working with Children Check and you have completed the online Parent Helper Course. These are both essential for you to be able to attend. The link for the Parent Helper course is available on your Compass home page. On your day/s, please arrive early and sign in at the office before making your way over to the classroom. Arriving 10-15 minutes before your class leaving time is perfect. We couldn’t do this without you!

Swimming will run every day until Friday the 11th of September. Please ensure that you pack your child some extra food on swimming days as they will be hungrier than usual. 

Our swimming schedule/out of school times are:

1K: 10:50am to 12:45pm 

1C: 11:30am to 1:25pm 

Inquiry Travel  Day: 

On Thursday 17th of September, we will enjoy a special Inquiry Day as we dive deeper into our Geography Inquiry unit! 

Throughout the day, students will explore different countries and cultures through a range of fun and engaging learning activities. We will discover interesting facts about different parts of the world and enjoy small snacks inspired by different cultures. 

To help make our day extra special, we encourage students to wear something that represents a country or culture. Students are also welcome to bring in a food from another country to share with their classmates. If bringing food, please include a recipe or list of ingredients so we know what is included. This will not replace recess or lunch, so please make sure these are still packed.

As Paddington has been our class book this term, we will also be watching the movie together. This will provide a wonderful opportunity for students to make connections between our class reading, different places around the world and our Geography learning. 

Curriculum Focus: Weeks 8-9

Reading: During this term we will be covering stage 7.4 of the Little Learners Love Literacy program. In the next two weeks we'll be learning more about alternative long ‘o’ sounds such as ‘o’ as pony and ‘ow’ as in show, ‘o_e’ like nose and ‘oe’ like toe.

Writing: Students will continue working on publishing their narrative ‘A Super Way to Travel’ and focus on letter formation and handwriting for the remainder of the term. 

Numeracy: We will continue our revising of all topics we have already covered this term. 

Inquiry:  Our topic this term is around Geography. So far we have ‘travelled’ Australia, England, France, Italy, Egypt and Kenya. During the remainder of the term we will be learning about other countries including their geography, cultures and celebrations. 

Willy Kids/Respectful Relationships: The Willy Kids focus is “Willy Kids are Positive” where students will be learning about facing situations with an open mind and an open heart, always expecting the best outcome. Our focus for Respectful Relationships this term is “Positive Gender Relationships”. In Week 9, we will be discussing what “personal space” means as well as how to keep our bodies safe.
