Year 5/6 - Newsletter

And we are off and running!
A very warm welcome to everyone for the beginning of what is set to be a busy Term 4. Year 5/6 students have settled in well upon returning to school this week and we are looking forward to a productive and positive term ahead. Term 4 is jam packed with learning, assessments, reports, transition, SLIP, Graduation, Survivor Day, Big Day Out and whole school events, such as the Christmas singalong.
In Inquiry, students are diving into Pop Culture throughout the eras. Students are very keen to learn about what major events, music, movies, and fashion Australians loved throughout the different decades. The rest of the school will be wondering what’s going on, as the Year 5/6 classrooms have been buzzing with the sound of big band jazz this week! We are sending home a Project tomorrow, asking the children to interview an important person in their lives, about the past. More information will be sent home about this by the end of the week.
This term, our literacy program continues to support the development of students’ knowledge of morphemes and grammar skills, as well as giving students the opportunity to delve into the world of Rivets and bridges, with our class story. During the first two weeks, students have been exploring how to structure a Persuasive Writing piece based on this story.
Literacy Circles has been our focus in Reading this term. The students have chosen their stories, got into their groups, have begun reading their allocated chapters and are starting to work on their comprehension roles, ready to go for their first meeting next week. They had plenty of practice in Term 2 with Literacy Circles so this time around it should be a breeze! In Mathematics, we have been very busy working in our Maths Groups. The groups are a wonderful way for the students to be challenged at their level and build confidence that sometimes slips away when the work is too difficult in a normal class. Our focus this term is Fractions, Decimals and Percentages.
Our SLIP and Graduation Preparation program started on Monday. SLIP aims to tap into students’ leadership potential through weekly activities and discussions about understanding the impact their leadership, both individually and as a year group, can have on their school and their peers; identifying the qualities of a good leader and recognising their own strengths; and improving their sense of self and enhancing their confidence in order to take on challenges such as public speaking.
Graduation Sessions allows the Year 6’s time to prepare their presentation for the night and practice that all important Graduation Dance!
Please remember that Term 4 requires students to wear a hat when outside in the yard. Any student that is not wearing a hat will need to stay undercover in the shade.
