FOOD TECHNOLOGY and FOOD STUDIES @ HEATHMONT

We have had a very busy and exciting term in the Food Technology kitchens! It has been amazing to see your students take on challenges and also to further refine their skills. Our Year8’s have loved finally getting a chance to participate in cooking sessions. Our focus has been on locking in positive class expectations around safety, personal hygiene and making connections with others. Students have worked in pairs and independently to produce a variety of dishes such as fruit kebabs, pikelets, ANZAC biscuits, muffins and pizza. Here are some happy snaps of a few of our students!
Year 9’s showed their skills with making snacks and meals so far this year. It is great to see so many students choose Food Technology as one of their electives!! They are currently hard at work on their pizza design brief task where they investigate and design their ideal pizza for an event.
Year 10s are taking the next step and delving into topics such as critical control points, food safety and prevention of illness, nutrition, lifestyle diseases and recipe adaptation. This gives them a taste of what is to come if they choose VCE Food Studies next year. A focus on food systems and sustainability is their current area of learning.
VCE students are working hard with our Year 11s studying the history of food commodities and comparing Hunter Gatherers to agriculturalists. Year 12s have just completed their first Area of Study on The Science of Food.
They created a nutritious breakfast for a teenager and used this information in their written SAC task.
We look forward to more fun times over the coming weeks and into Term 2.
Bon Appetit!!
