Auslan

Grades 1 and 2

Year 1 students this week will continue to practice their alphabet and we will begin exploring numbers. Through games, movement and repetition, students will practice recognising and signing letters and numbers.

Year 2 students will build on their recent learning by practising simple conversations in Auslan. They will ask and answer basic questions (such as likes and preferences) and practice signing numbers. Partner activities and games will help students grow confidence using Auslan with others.

Grades 3 and 4

Students will learn Auslan signs for common classroom objects and practise responding to classroom instructions. Lessons will focus on understanding and following directions in Auslan.

Grades 5 and 6

Students will extend their classroom Auslan by following more complex instructions, including multi-step directions. They will practise using sequencing language and facial expression to understand and communicate meaning clearly in Auslan.

Visual Arts

This week all students will begin a unit on Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama. They will look at her life and be inspired by the dots and colours she uses in her artwork.

Prep

Students will begin a self-portrait. This will be the first of 7 different self-portraits that these students will complete over their primary school journey. They will be kept together at school and presented to families at the end of Grade 6. Their first self-portrait will be focussing on the shapes and lines that make up their face. They will begin to create a rainbow background to mount their drawing on.

Students will also begin a painted picture of colour and lines inspired by Kusama.

Grade 1/2

Students will practise drawing mushrooms inspired by artist Kusama. They will then use plasticine to ‘paint’ their mushroom onto cardboard using smudging and rolling techniques.

Grade 3/4

Students will continue to work on their chair bags, decorating it with their name and pictures that demonstrate their personality and passions.

They will also be looking at Kusama’s ‘Obliteration Room’ and working in partners create their own from white cardboard and paper.

Grade 5

Students will be adding to their layered canvas painting, this week painting lines and dots in contrasting colours.

Students will also practise drawing mushrooms inspired by artist Kusama. They will look at different varieties and create a ‘net’ background for their drawings to be mounted onto.

Grade 6

Students will be adding to their layered canvas painting, this week painting lines and dots in contrasting colours.

They will also be creating a pumpkin out of clay, inspired by Kusama.

Art Competition!

The Art Captains will be holding a competition over the next couple of weeks for all students to participate in. Students will be invited to create an artwork (at home) that will be used as the background for the Art Club Posters. These posters will be displayed around the school thoughout the year to advertise the Art Club.

All students are welcome to participate. Details of the comeptition are below:

-One entry per person.

-Artwork must be on A4 size paper and 2D (flat)

-Artwork can be any theme or design - use your imagination!

-Entries to be submitted by Friday 6th of March.

-Place entries in the tub at the office.

We're looking forward to seeing the creative entries roll in!

Physical Education

Inter School Sport – Grade 5 & 6

Our Grade 5 and 6 students are looking forward to the upcoming Interschool Sport Gala Days on Tuesday March 3 and Tuesday March 10. Students have been placed into their teams and have been training well. It has been fantastic to see their teamwork, sportsmanship and effort as they prepare for competition. We wish all teams the best of luck and look forward to two great days of sport.

District Swimming Carnival – Grades 4–6

The upcoming District Swimming Carnival is open to competitive swimmers in Grades 4 to 6. This event is designed for students who are confident and experienced swimmers and are able to compete at a strong level.

This week in PE…

Prep

This week, our Prep students will continue building on their understanding of the routines and expectations in Physical Education. They will practise moving safely in shared spaces while revisiting skills such as running, jumping, balancing and stopping on a whistle. Students will participate in simple game-based activities that encourage listening, following instructions and working with others. The focus remains on building confidence, coordination and positive participation in PE.

Grade 1 & 2

This week, our Grade 1 and 2 students will begin focusing on developing correct overarm throwing technique. Students will learn the key components of the skill, including side-on stance, stepping with the opposite foot, and following through towards a target. They will practise through engaging partner activities and small games designed to build confidence, accuracy and control.

Grade 3 & 4

This week, students in Grades 3 and 4 will continue refining their overarm throwing technique. The focus will be on improving accuracy, consistency and power, while reinforcing correct body positioning and follow-through. Students will then apply their skills in modified game situations, encouraging decision-making, teamwork and effective skill execution under pressure.

Grade 5 & 6

This week, our Grade 5 and 6 students will continue building on their throwing accuracy in game situations. Students will participate in activities that challenge them to make quick decisions about when and where to throw, while maintaining control and precision. The emphasis will be on applying strong technique in dynamic, game-based scenarios, as well as demonstrating teamwork and strategic thinking.

Performing Arts

This week in Performing Arts, students will be busy making music and movement together.

Prep classes will be singing songs, moving their bodies and playing percussion instruments to explore the concept of a steady beat, while also learning about the musical element of tempo — noticing the difference between fast and slow.

In Years 1 and 2, students will be inspired by the Winter Olympics, particularly figure skating. They will design their own “skates” and use them to explore movement ideas such as pathways, mirroring and matching, alongside singing skating-themed songs and chants.

Students in Years 3–6 will begin a bucket drumming unit, discovering how everyday objects can create different sounds, finding different tones on the drum, keeping a steady beat and exploring music in 4/4 time.

Across the whole school, all classes will also begin learning Count on Me by Bruno Mars, which we will sing together later in the term as a celebration of our CBL Big Idea of Community.
