Buddies

The Grade 6 buddies have been wonderful in helping our Preps feel safe at school and form connections. Up until now, Preps have been playing with their buddies at recess and lunch. This week, we will be trialling Preps playing with other Preps at recess. The buddies will check in to make sure everyone is feeling comfortable, has friends to play with and has a game to enjoy. Students will continue to spend lunch playing with their buddies for this week. If you think your child might need a little preparation for this change, please let them know at home so they feel ready and confident.

CURRICULUM

📚 Phonics and reading

We will begin our UFLI program this week, starting with the letters A and M.

Our learning focus will include:

  • Understanding the phonemes (the sounds each letter makes)
  • Learning the cued articulation for these sounds
  • Identifying where we might see each letter in a word
  • Practising the graphemes (the way we write the letter), including correct letter formation

What can you do at home?

• Look for the letters A and M on signs, labels and in books.

•Ask your child to tell you the sounds A and M make and to show you the cued articulation for each sound.

• Enjoy bedtime stories together to build vocabulary, comprehension and a love of reading.

📝 Literature: reading responses and writing

Our Mentor Texts are The Five Rules of Friendship and The Colour Monster. Students will be learning how to make 'text-to-self' connections - thinking about how the events or ideas in a story relate to their own experiences. Using The Five Rules of Friendship, we will explore the author’s five key friendship rules: respecting body boundaries, listening, being kind, treating everyone equally and standing up for others. With The Colour Monster, students will reflect on their own feelings and connect them to the emotions shown in the story.

In writing, students will be focusing on developing their fine motor control. They will practise using a functional pencil grip while forming the letters A and M, paying attention to correct entry and exit points.

🏡 What can you do at home?

•Practice letter formation of A and M using crayons, pencils, or even finger tracing in sand.

•Provide activities that build hand strength and coordination, such as playing with playdough, threading beads or using tweezers to pick up small objects.

🔢  Maths

Our new maths concept is Time. Students will explore ordering daily events, learn about the parts of the day - including morning, lunchtime, afternoon, and night - and begin to discuss the days of the week.

🏡  What can you do at home?

• Talk about daily routines by discussing what happens in the morning, at lunchtime in the afternoon and at night.

• Point out the days of the week on a calendar and encourage your child to plan or identify activities that they do on specific days.

💛 Wellbeing

Our SWPBS focus this week is Be Safe, with an emphasis on keeping our hands and feet to ourselves. In Respectful Relationships, students are building their emotional literacy by exploring different emotions - how they feel, how they might sound and what can cause these emotions.

🏡  What can you do at home?

•Reinforce safe behaviours by reminding your child to keep hands and feet to themselves during play and interactions with others.
