Literacy 📖

Reading

Students are working with short texts and responding to a variety of question types. We are focusing on identifying important information, finding evidence, and using the RACE structure (restate, answe, cite and explain) to build strong written responses.

What you can do at home:

Ask your child to summarise what they read in a few sentences. Encourage them to explain why they think something happened in the text or how a character might be feeling. Talking through their thinking strengthens comprehension.

Writing

Our focus has shifted to narrative writing. Students are exploring narrative structure, practising “show, don’t tell,” and learning small techniques that elevate creative writing. We are encouraging clear and accurate sentence level writing, thoughtful editing and making intentional revisions to strengthen their writing..

What you can do at home:

Encourage your child to reread their writing aloud before finishing. Hearing their own words helps them notice errors and improve flow. Celebrate effort, persistence, and careful editing rather than just the final result.

Numeracy 🔢

Maths: Level 5 and 6

Students are continuing our work with data representation, designing investigations, choosing appropriate graph types, and learning to represent information clearly using scales, labels and keys. A strong emphasis is being placed on mathematical vocabulary so students can accurately describe trends, compare results, and justify conclusions using evidence from data. This helps students move beyond creating graphs to explaining what the data shows and what it means.

What you can do at home:

Look at graphs together in newspapers, apps, or online. Ask questions such as, “What patterns do you notice?” or “What might happen next?” Encouraging reasoning is just as important as getting the correct answer.

CBL 🌍

Big Idea: Community

Students are exploring their own character strengths and how these contribute to their communities. We are building toward Connection Groups in Week 5, where students will lead and participate in mixed-age activities and games designed to strengthen relationships across the school.

Wellbeing 💛

Respectful Relationships

This week’s lesson focuses on emotions and understanding them. Students are learning to recognise feelings in themselves and others and exploring healthy ways to express emotions. Building this awareness helps students respond more calmly to conflict and challenges as the year gathers pace, giving them strategies to manage adversity in positive and respectful ways.

- Homework will be outlined to all students in 5/6 this week. Please assist your child in recording their 20 minutes of reading (x4), Mathletics tasks (x2) and Nessy tasks (x2) in their calendar app on their iPad.

Wifi Issues

In these first few weeks, we have noticed many students have been unable to connect to our school wifi. Our technician believes a possible solution for this issue is to ensure your child's iPad is updated to the latest iOS version (26.3).

Devices that are not running iOS 26.3 may experience difficulty connecting to the school network or accessing required apps and services.

Before starting the update, please check that the iPad has enough available storage space. You may need to delete unused apps, old photos/videos, or other files in order for the update to install successfully.

To update:

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap General
  3. Select Software Update
  4. Download and install iOS 26.3

We recommend completing this update at home using a reliable Wi-Fi connection and ensuring the iPad is charged or plugged in during the process.
