Mindfulness – Being Present

At Lockington Consolidated School, we are continuing to build our students’ understanding of mindfulness as part of The Resilience Project’s GEM principles of Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness.

Mindfulness is about being present and paying attention to what is happening right now. It helps children notice their thoughts, feelings and surroundings without judging them. Even simple activities such as taking a few slow breaths, listening carefully to sounds around us, noticing how our body feels or focusing on one task at a time can help develop mindfulness.

Practising mindfulness can support students to calm their minds, manage big emotions, improve concentration and respond thoughtfully to challenges. These are valuable skills that can be used both at school and at home.

Why not try a simple mindfulness activity together as a family?

Take a quiet minute to stop, breathe slowly and notice five things you can see, four things you can feel, three things you can hear, two things you can smell and one thing you can taste.

Sometimes, taking a moment to pause and be present is all we need to reset and refocus.
