Year 3/4 News 

Literacy

Students have been exploring the purpose and key features of informative texts, as well as the strategies authors use when writing non-fiction. They have been researching information on a farming-related topic and applying their understanding to draft, edit and revise their own informative texts. Students have been developing their ability to organise information clearly, use appropriate vocabulary, and communicate factual information effectively.

Our fluency passage this week was an informative text about local Paralympian Col Pearse. This provided an engaging connection to our Inquiry topic, where students are learning to recognise and celebrate notable people from the Lockington area. Students enjoyed learning about Col’s achievements and developing their reading fluency while making meaningful connections between their literacy learning and our local community.

Numeracy 

Students have continued to develop their strategies for solving worded problems and improving their multiplication fluency. They have explored different strategies for adding and subtracting amounts of money, creating and managing shopping budgets, and accurately calculating change. Students have also applied their mathematical skills to real-life situations by planning an excursion within set budgetary constraints. This has involved comparing costs, making appropriate spending decisions, calculating totals, and ensuring that the overall budget is maintained. 

Kids Helpline Session

During Bullying No Way Week (17–21 August), we accepted an invitation from Kids Helpline to participate in a nationwide anti-bullying lesson. Students took part in an engaging online session designed specifically for their age group. The lesson was developed by Kids Helpline counsellors, aligned with the curriculum, and provided students with practical strategies for recognising and responding to bullying.

Throughout the session, students explored how they can use their power for good and make positive choices when faced with bullying situations. They listened to real-life stories and were introduced to an easy-to-remember, age-appropriate strategy for responding to and helping to shut down bullying. The session provided valuable opportunities for students to reflect on how their words and actions can contribute to creating a safe, respectful and supportive school community.

Kids Helpline is a free, private and confidential counselling service available 24/7 to children and young people aged 5–25 across Australia. Support is available by phone and online, providing young people with a safe and supportive space to talk to a trained counsellor about anything that may be worrying or affecting them.

Interschool Athletics Carnival

Good luck to all our Grade 3/4 students competing at the Interschool Athletics Carnival in Moama next week! (Please see 'Specialists' page for more information). Students have been working incredibly hard during training and have consistently demonstrated a positive attitude, great teamwork and a willingness to always do their best. We are so proud of their efforts and know they will represent our school with enthusiasm and pride.
