Auslan
Grade 1 and 2
This week, students will watch the Auslan Storybooks version of The Very Cranky Bear. Students will focus on recognising animals and showing emotions using facial expression, gesture and body movement. They will respond to the story through miming and drawing, learning how important non-manual features (facial expression and body language) are in Auslan communication.
Grade 3 and 4
This week in Auslan, our Year 3 and 4 students will watch the Auslan Storybooks version of The Wrong Book. Students will focus on identifying repeated signs and high-frequency phrases in the story, and discuss how these translate to English. They will explore how facial expression and other non-manual features add meaning in storytelling, and notice how changes in expression can influence interpretation and understanding.
Grade 5 and 6
This week, Grade 5 and 6 students will explore visual storytelling in Auslan by viewing a familiar signed fairy tale and examining how characters, emotions and actions are brought to life through facial expression, role shift, gestures and body movement. Students will then put their own creative spin on the story by changing a character, setting or ending before creating and presenting a short signed retell. Through this activity, students will develop their confidence using non-manual features (NMFs), role shift and movement to communicate meaning, emotion and humour, while discovering what makes storytelling in Auslan unique and engaging.

Thankyou to those parents that have helped out in the Art room this term. There are many spots still remaining for this week and next week that we would love to fill as we prepare for Father's Day gifts going home and preparing for our Beauty and the Beast Jr. production.

In the classroom this week...
Prep students will be wrapping their Father's Day present ready to gift to their special person. They will also find objects in the art room to trace around to create an abstract picture.
Grade 1 students will be adding their second layer to their Father's day painting. This week they will paint black over the top of their secondary colours and scrape it back using a texture comb.
Here are some students experiencing colour mixing and finger painting!
Grade 2 students will be starting a two week project creating an 'Affirmation Painting'. They will choose three statements that are true about themselves that are encouraging and uplifting, and after drawing them between wiggly lines, they will add water colour detail.
Grade 3/4 students will be making an ingredients tag to go with their home made goodies for their Father's Day gift. They will use their iPads to create a design focussing on font selection, balance, and creativity and clarity of information.

Grade 5 students will be continuing to work on their puppets for their 2027 buddies. They will sew the perimeter with a sewing machine before turning it through and adding animal features to the front.

Grade 6 students will be finishing their Father's Day gift, creating a picasso inspired collage portrait of their Dad or special person. They are focussing on cubism and asymmetry while still finding some elements that represent their Dad to feature.
STEM
Grade 1/2
This week, continuing their learning about animals and habitats, students are exploring how we can care for and protect the places where living things live. They are creating a poster that shows a habitat and explains ways people can help keep it healthy.
Grade 3/4
This week, Grade 3/4 students are investigating weather and the seasons, revising their understanding that seasons are influenced by the Earth’s movement. They are also learning how scientists and meteorologists measure and record weather conditions such as temperature, rainfall and wind. To apply their learning, students will design an invention that can measure either rainfall or wind strength, encouraging them to think creatively about how scientific tools are designed and used.
Grade 5/6
This week, Grade 5/6 students are beginning our next unit exploring natural disasters. Students are learning how earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur and how these natural events can reshape the land and affect the atmosphere. To demonstrate their understanding, students will create a storyboard that illustrates the process of either an earthquake or a volcanic eruption, using labelled diagrams to explain each stage.
Performing Arts
Please note: Due to the Victorian State Schools Spectacular rehearsals and our Book Week Parade this week, not all students will have their usual Performing Arts session.
Preps are continuing to learn the music and lyrics to their songs in Beauty and the Beast Jr., building confidence in singing and performing together. They are also continuing their pirate role play, using voice, movement and imagination to explore characters and bring stories to life.
Grade 1 and 2 are continuing to learn and rehearse their songs for Beauty and the Beast Jr. Students are becoming increasingly familiar with the music and lyrics while developing their confidence in singing and performing together.
Grade 3 and 4 are continuing to develop their puppet films. Using green screen technology and their iPads, students are filming and editing short scenes featuring their puppet characters.
Grade 5 and 6 are continuing their puppet buddy projects, creating a performance for their current or future buddy. Students are working together to develop their ideas through set building and design, scripting, rehearsing and puppetry, with a focus on creating an engaging performance for a younger audience.
