NAPLAN Results Highlight Strong Achievement and Outstanding Growth in Learning

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) provides valuable insights into students' literacy and numeracy development across Australia. Since 2023, NAPLAN has been delivered in an online adaptive format, allowing students to complete assessments in Reading, Writing, Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation, and Numeracy. Student achievement is reported against four proficiency standards: Exceeding, Strong, Developing, and Needs Additional Support, providing a clear picture of both achievement and areas for future growth.

Kilvington students have once again achieved exceptional results in this year's NAPLAN assessments. An outstanding 91% of students achieved in the Strong or Exceeding proficiency standards, reflecting the high levels of academic achievement across the School. Our Numeracy results were particularly impressive, with 81% of Year 5 students achieving a numeracy result above the level typically expected of a Year 7 student. Writing also continues to be a significant strength, with 66% of Year 9 students achieving the Exceeding proficiency standard, alongside a substantial increase in the cohort's median scale score. These results are a testament to the dedication of our students, the expertise of our teachers, and the strong partnership we share with families. Congratulations to all students on their outstanding efforts and achievements.

Equally encouraging is the exceptional growth demonstrated by our students, both from Years 3 to 5 and between Years 7 and 9. While achievement provides a snapshot of where students are currently performing, growth measures the progress they have made over time and reflects the impact of sustained learning. In Year 9 Writing, for example, 50% of students demonstrated high levels of growth, highlighting the significant progress many students have made regardless of their starting point. This aligns closely with Kilvington's commitment to a growth mindset, where improvement, perseverance and continual development are celebrated alongside high achievement.

How we create opportunities to strengthen student writing skills

While many factors contribute to student growth, the continued focus on writing across the Years 7–12 English program has played an important role in supporting students' development. Under the guidance of Ernest Price, Writer in Residence, and Sonia Murr, Head of English, students benefit from a rich range of opportunities to strengthen their writing, including explicit, faculty-specific writing strategies, targeted support and extension classes for Year 12, a vibrant Writing Club, author visits, and our annual Literature Festival.

As Ernest says: “writing helps us make sense of the world around us. It is one of the most important tools we have for processing information. Finding our voice as a writer helps us grow as a learner, a thinker and a member of our community”.

The strong growth demonstrated in our NAPLAN Writing results reflects our commitment to fostering confident, capable communicators. We look forward to continuing to grow our learners in the years ahead.

How we use NAPLAN data

At Kilvington, NAPLAN is one piece of a broader picture of student learning. While it provides a snapshot of achievement on a single day, teachers consider NAPLAN results alongside classroom assessments, observations, wellbeing insights and conversations with students to understand individual learning needs.

NAPLAN data helps us identify students who may benefit from additional support, as well as those ready for further challenge. Teachers also use patterns in the data to inform curriculum planning and ensure we continue to meet the needs of all learners.
