Grade 2
Literacy
In Literacy, we have been continuing to build on our knowledge of conjunctions (and, but, or), using them to stick two sentences together. We have added a new tool to our comprehension toolbox ‘Main Idea’. Using hints learned, students were able to grasp a better understanding of what they are reading. In spelling, we explored words using the silent ‘k, b & w’. Students also practised reading, writing and sharing sentences about our tricky words ‘decided, know & where’.
Writing
This term, our Grade 2 students have been enjoying the wonderful story The Snail and the Whale by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. Through the story, students have been exploring the important theme of being a good friend and discussing the different ways we can show kindness, care and support towards others.
Students have been reading and analysing a poem about friendship, identifying rhyming words and discussing how poets use rhyme to make their poems enjoyable to read. Students have then had the opportunity to modify the poem by changing the rhyming words and editing lines to create their own versions.
As they developed their writing skills, students used what they had learnt to create their own friendship poems. They thought carefully about what made someone a good friend and used descriptive language, rhyming words and creative ideas to express their thoughts.
Maths
In Maths, we have been learning about multiplication, division and 2D shapes. We have been solving division problems using sharing, equal groups and partitioning, and learning to identify the unit in multiplication and division problems.
We have also been exploring two-dimensional shapes. Students have been learning to name and describe shapes, identify features such as sides and parallel lines, and sort shapes into groups, including regular and irregular shapes.
We have been working on using mathematical language to explain our thinking and show what we know.
Integrated
This term, students have been learning all about Australia and the world around us! They have been developing their geographical knowledge by exploring the six states and two territories of Australia and learning to identify them on a map.
Students have discovered interesting facts about each state and territory, including their capital cities, locations and unique features. They have also been practising their map-reading skills and learning how to use maps to locate different places across Australia.
Our learning then expanded beyond Australia as students explored the seven continents of the world: Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Antarctica, Europe and Australia. Students have been learning where each continent is located and comparing their size, location and features.
Mini Hoop Time
On Friday the 7th of August some of our grade 2 students participated in a mini hoop time program at the Dandenong Basketball Stadium. Students were introduced to basic skills like dribbling, passing and shooting. These skills were incorporated into fun games such as popcorn, dribble knockout, and golden child. Once they practiced these skills, they then participated in a round robin of 8 minute mini games playing against different teams. Thank you Mr. Pike for organising an incredible opportunity for our grade 2 students.
Cosmodome Incursion
On Thursday 13th August, we were excited to take part in an exciting Cosmodome incursion! Students had the opportunity to explore the wonders of space, planets and our universe through an engaging and interactive experience.
The incursion allowed students to discover new facts about space and build on their understanding of Earth, the Moon, the Sun and the solar system. It was a fun and memorable learning experience that encouraged students to ask questions, share their ideas and explore the amazing world beyond our planet!
