Grade 4 Discovery Day

On Monday, 27 July, 68 Grade 4 students from Our Lady of the Nativity Aberfeldie, Corpus Christi Kingsville, St Fidelis Coburg, St John's Footscray and St Michael's North Melbourne attended our second Grade 4 Discovery Day at Academy. 

Students started the day with a welcome and a scavenger hunt where they visited significant sites within the College grounds.  After recess, students experienced a day in the life of an Academy student.  They were placed into three groups and rotated around various activities which included: 

• Social Justice and bracelet making 
• STEM class using microscopes to observe living creatures in pond water 
• Food Tech class making pizzas 

A very big thank you to Ms Atkins, Ms Marriott and Ms Sachanandani for facilitating these sessions.  Also, a very big thankyou to the student helpers who did an amazing job chaperoning our Grade 4 guests. 

Our final Discovery Day for the year will take place in Term 4 on Monday, 12 October when five more local Catholic primary schools will visit our College.

We have loved starting celebrating Book Week early!  This past week, students have been invited to pick up a Book Passport, a Bingo Card for the Staff Book/Band T-Shirt competition and R.A.G.E Book Club ran an amazing race style Scavenger Hunt around the school. 

Congratulations to Ava B and Carla C both from 7 Green for winning first place in the Scavenger Hunt, and to Eva T, 7 Purple and Sarah T, 7 Green on placing second.  Well done girls!   We have so many activities planned for next week, we look forward to these and will have a review in the next newsletter.  

We have welcomed Year 7 Health classes into the MRC for research lessons on their Health Assignments.  The students have learnt more about the MRC Library Page, Quick Lists, Referencing and making a Bibliography, and the art of synthesising information.   We have put together a display of Puberty Books that will help them access the information easily, and write their assessment. 

We have also welcomed Year 9 Science classes into the MRC for their infectious diseases assessment.  It has been amazing to further develop their research skills, explore Boolean terms and how best to access and synthesise information. 

The Year 7 Readers’ Cup continues with pages noted, and results for these last two cycles hidden from students!   Winners will be announced next term.  There will be a winning Mentor Group for pages won, alongside a winner in each Mentor for:

• Star Reader (pages read)
• Best Logger (logged pages)
• Awesome Reviewer (best book review)

We encourage you to talk to your daughter about their wide reading and increase household reading engagement. 

The Children’s Book Council of Australia has announced their shortlist, and winners will be announced the day this Newsletter is published.  A wonderful list to add to your own home library and continue the love of literature at home.  Moreover, the shortlist for the 2026 Prime Minister’s Literary Awards has been announced.
