Recently we had Alana Kilmartin come to present to a group of Year 10s. Alana has written ‘Unserious Careers’ and is currently on a roadshow across Australia discussing her book and experiences through her working life. 

The book and presentation focus on it being okay to not know what you want to do when you finish school, and the steps we can take to make our decisions a little easier.

Our students absolutely loved the presentation and were able to join in and have a laugh alongside Alana. As many of us can relate to, Alana has had a range of careers and experiences through her working life with some definite highs and lows. It was great for students to be able to see we can have a laugh at ourselves, learn from mistakes and why it is important to surround ourselves with people who support us.

We will definitely have Alana come to present at MacKillop again in 2026 for both students and hopefully a parent presentation. 

I have some copies of Alana’s book ‘Unserious Careers: A fun guide to the first five years of your career’ in my office. I encourage students and parents to have a read of this wonderful book - let me know if you would like to borrow a copy. 

A big thank you to those students who put up their hands and joined in - you will know that is a key for this presentation! Alana is finishing off her roadshow through 2025 and was on her way to South Australia when she left MacKillop. We are really looking forward to having her return and help our students.
