NAPLAN

The Grade 5 students have been working hard to complete their NAPLAN tests this week. They showed great focus and tried their best in the reading, writing, language conventions, and numeracy assessments. Throughout the process, the students demonstrated resilience, careful thinking, and a positive attitude. We are proud of the effort they put into each test and the way they supported one another during this important learning experience.

Maths

Over the last two weeks we have been exploring different strategies to help solve more complex multiplication problems. We have been focusing on both the partitioning method and the lattice method for multiplication. Students have been learning how to set up a lattice grid, multiply each pair of digits, and place the answers correctly within the diagonal sections. These strategies help students organise their working clearly and strengthens their understanding of place value when multiplying larger numbers. Students have been practising this method to build accuracy and confidence in their multiplication skills.

Word Work

This week, students reviewed several spelling rules during our mini lessons. We practised the -ck rule, the /ch/ and /j/ spelling rules, the FLOSS rule, and the soft c rule. Students completed word mapping, dictation activities, and reviewed heart words and homophones while discussing tricky sounds in words. The week finished with a spelling test to show their understanding.

In Morphology students have been exploring how adding affixes to a base word changes the meaning of a word. This week we have been studying the prefix dis- and how adding it to the beginning of a word changes the meaning to not or opposite.
