Book Week Parade & School Assembly - Monday 24th August
Book Week is almost here! Join us for our annual Book Week Parade & School Assembly on Monday, August 24th at 9.15am in Emmaus. This year's CBCA Book Week theme, Symphony of Stories. All students are invited to dress as their favourite book character, and we can't wait to see everyone's creativity on display!
We know costumes can get expensive, so here are some budget-friendly ideas using things you probably already have at home.
Nearly free (raid the wardrobe)
- Pyjama-clad character – pyjamas, dressing gown, slippers, and a favourite book tucked under an arm.
- Where's Wally? – red-and-white striped top, jeans, a red beanie, and round glasses (drawn on cardboard works too!).
- Matilda – a plain dress, two braids, and a stack of books to carry.
- The Twits – old cardigan, messy hair, and drawn-on stubble; curlers and mismatched clothes for Mrs Twit.
- Charlotte's Web – overalls and a straw hat for Fern or Wilbur's owner; or all-black clothing with a spider drawn/pinned on for Charlotte.
- Billie B Brown – a simple dress, odd socks, and pigtails.
- Hey Jack – everyday shorts and t-shirt, with a favourite soft toy carried along.
Animal mask – print off a free face mask from the internet.
One cheap prop makes the costume
- The Very Hungry Caterpillar – green shirt/leggings with painted egg cartons pinned on as body segments.
- Cat in the Hat – red bow tie, white gloves, and a tall hat made from a cereal box.
- Harry Potter – round glasses, a drawn-on lightning bolt, a black jumper, and a house-colour scarf.
Pirate – striped shirt, rolled-up trousers, a bandana, and a cardboard hook or eyepatch.
Cardboard box magic
A decorated cardboard box becomes a robot, a snail shell, or almost any character with a bit of paint and imagination.
Family Tip - Siblings or friends could come as a themed group — think Three Little Pigs or Gruffalo characters — using coloured t-shirts as a base and one shared prop.
We can't wait to see your wonderful costumes on the day. See you at the parade!
