Circle of Control

Friendships… they can be challenging to navigate, and not just for adults. Kids find them incredibly challenging. It is tricky for kids to navigate the many relationships that they have across their lives. Parents, siblings, friends, teachers… all of these people bring a different type of relationship, and different boundaries.

Our little people are not too far from the days where all they did was cry, and their every need was met. They were the centre of their own worlds. As they have grown, they have had to learn to navigate school, and all the new things that come with it. Our little people learn that they are no longer the centre of the world, and they are one of many people in it. Some understand this quicker, and some take a little more time, and that’s okay.

Today, I wanted to discuss the book “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People,” by Stephen R. Covey, who introduced a framework to boost personal and interpersonal effectiveness, as seen in this diagram.

When dealing with a challenging period of time, breaking it down into the 3 circles helps us to process the situation and then be able to focus on the things that we can actually control. This promotes a proactive and flexible mindset which can help to improve mental health.

Please watch this short video to further explain the concept and feel free to have a try at home yourself or with your family.
