We believe that students are powerful agents of change, and our Grade 5/6 students have recently shown just how impactful their ideas can be.
After some concerns about litter around the school grounds recently (not uncommon in busy places like school yards!) Our 5/6 teachers took the problem to the people so to speak, and asked the students for advice. Senior students took the lead in exploring ways to make a positive difference. Through discussion and collaboration, they identified that our bins could be more visible and engaging. Their solution? Give them personality!
Working together, the students came up with a range of fun and creative names for our bins to help them stand out and encourage everyone to use them. A shortlist of pretty amazing and creative suggestions was compiled and students and staff got a chance to vote. A map was then created, so that bin monitors know where each bin-sonality lives. You might spot some of these around the school—keep an eye out for bins like “Binderella” and “La Bin James”!
This initiative is a fantastic example of student voice in action. By involving students in identifying problems and creating solutions, we not only improve our environment but also build a strong sense of ownership and pride in our school community.
We’re proud of our 5/6 students for leading the way and reminding us all that even small actions (like using the bin) can make a big difference! An opportunity to laugh together and strengthen our community bond is a priceless side effect of this fun iniative.
