Summer and I had the opportunity to visit mayor Kirsten Langford in her chambers at the town hall. We had an interactive session with her and also participated in some activities.
Here’s a snapshot of our activities :
- Photoshoot
All the kids and adults walked to the mayor's chambers to get photos with mayor Kirsten Langford. Each school got a few photos with the mayor. And after a long wait as there were many schools participating, we had a group photo. Although we also had a silly face photo, the mayor couldn’t do a silly face because she was wearing her ceremonial gown which is a token of responsibility.
- Roles of mayor
The mayor talked about what she does as mayor which included her key interests on making more parks and open spaces, an activity hub, playgrounds and much more.
- Q&A
We then had a generous amount of time to ask questions about a day in the life of being mayor and some responsibilities that she has. She answered our questions enthusiastically from the silliest question which was when do you wake up to a serious question like what was her hardest decision. What she likes about her role is going to the citizenship ceremony and handing out the certificates, but she’s not very pleased wearing the ceremonial gown in hot weather!
- Name the group
We had to brainstorm ideas on what to name the group. And after a vote, we decided on the Kid Kouncilors. And our alternative is Kids Advisor.
- Foods and snacks to have at meetings
We discussed some of the snacks that we should have at the next two meetings and decided upon sushi, mini pizza and fruit.
- Government activity
We did an activity to identify which of the three governments are responsible for roads, parks, building permits, vaccinations and some others.
- Master plan on Walker Park
We made suggestions to the master plan on Walker Park which consisted of adding things to the park like benches, removing the tennis court to make a bigger gymnastics club and adding a fence around the playground. I hope that some of our suggestions will be implemented.
Overall, we had a great learning experience with the mayor and other participating schools.
