Positive Behaviour for Learning – When Things Don’t Go So Well

At SJV, we know that learning doesn’t always go smoothly — and this includes learning how to manage our behaviour, emotions and relationships. When things don’t go well at school, how we respond as adults can make a real difference.

We encourage families to begin with curiosity rather than judgement. Ask your child, “What happened?”, “How did you feel?” and “What could you do differently next time?” This helps children reflect on their choices and take responsibility without feeling labelled by their behaviour.

It is also important to reinforce that making a mistake does not make a child a bad person. Behaviour provides an opportunity to learn, repair relationships and practise a better choice next time. At SJV, we use our values of Respect, Responsibility and Resilience to help students understand expectations and develop the skills they need to succeed.

When school contacts you about a behaviour concern, we ask families to work in partnership with us. A calm, supportive conversation at home can reinforce the same messages students hear at school and help them move forward positively.

Together, we can help our children understand that mistakes are part of learning, responsibility matters, and every day is a new opportunity to make positive choices.
