Year 5/6 Newsletter-  Week 6, Term 3

Dear Parents and Carers,

We are now well into Term 3, and the students are making fantastic progress across all areas of their learning. Here is a snapshot of what we’ve been working on and some important reminders for the weeks ahead.

Literacy

In literacy, students have finished their information reports on the Gold Rush and Eureka Stockade and have started planning their Historical Diaries based on characters from the goldfields. We are continuing to read The Night We Stormed Eureka.

Mathematics

This week in maths, we have been exploring the connections between multiplication and division. Students are using multiplication and division facts to explore algebra and reasoning. We encourage students to continue practicing their multiplication facts at home to develop automatic recall and fluency.

Inquiry

Students have engaged in some great learning around the Gold Rush and are enjoying choosing response tasks from the grid to complete and share each week.  Task examples from this week include:

  • Design a poster / newspaper advertisement to promote this weeks entertainment on the Goldfields
  • Write a poem that could be read around the campfire about life on the diggings.
  • Create a flyer advertising a family friendly event to Celebrate Queen Victorians Birthday. There must be multiple events for the family to enjoy.
  •  Create a glossary of 10 things people on the  goldfields could do for fun.
  • There is a horserace to be held next weekend.
  • You need to create 10 creative horse names that are related to the Gold rush
