Principal's Message

Over recent weeks we have welcomed a number of visitors into our school, leaders from other schools, system staff, allied health and casual replacement teachers. Each one has commented on the same thing, the warmth of our educators and the kindness, confidence and calm of our students.
This culture does not happen by osmosis. At St Martin de Porres, we are intentional about creating the conditions where children thrive. Our Behaviour Curriculum gives students clarity about routines so their cognitive load is free for learning. Our high expectations ensure every child knows they can achieve. Our teachers, combine warmth, with high expectations, they bring deep curriculum knowledge, strong relationships and a clear understanding of where each learner is and where they need to go next. These are the ingredients of a highly effective school and we are grateful for the way our community lives them each day.
After seven wonderful years at St Martin de Porres, Sarah will be finishing in Term 3 as she is returning home to Ireland. What began as a short stay in Australia became seven years of contribution and care. Sarah’s humour, kindness and genuine warmth have shaped our school in lasting ways and many students and families will feel her absence. As she prepares for her wedding next year, the pull to return home to family and friends has grown stronger. While we will miss her deeply, this is an exciting new chapter for her.
As we prepare to farewell Sarah, I am very pleased to share that, following a thorough interview process, Claudia Fuentas will be joining our staff team from Thursday, 4th June. Claudia brings warmth, commitment and genuine enthusiasm to her work. Her previous schoo spoke highly of her professional and caring manner, her ability to support students’ learning and emotional wellbeing and her strong attention to detail. She is described as someone who values each child’s contribution, encourages them to do their best and engages in reflective practice to ensure high‑quality teaching. Her previous school shared that we are very lucky to have her joining our community. We look forward to welcoming Claudia to SMDP.
Our Year 5/6 students have recently returned from camp. Our teachers shared that students embraced every challenge with enthusiasm. From team‑building activities to outdoor adventures, they showed resilience, cooperation and plenty of joy.
Thank you for your ongoing partnership. Together, we continue to build a school where every child feels known, supported and challenged to thrive.
Warm regards,
Elise Coghlan
Principal
