The Value of Showing Up

At St Patrick’s College, co-curricular life is not an optional extra. It is a vital part of who we are as a Catholic school community and an important expression of the values we hope to form in every young man. While classroom learning remains central, co-curricular involvement develops the character, confidence and commitment that carry well beyond school.

Each year, we rightly celebrate students who reach the milestone of five co-curricular commitments. This recognition acknowledges boys who have embraced College life, contributed broadly, and shown a willingness to be involved even when it requires time, effort and sacrifice.

There is an important message for all students and families - when a boy commits to a team, ensemble, activity or program, he is expected to show up. Commitment cannot depend on convenience, mood, weather or whether the opposition is close to home. Turning up, being prepared, travelling when required and giving genuine effort are all part of representing St Patrick’s. This includes stepping outside the comfort zone, whether travelling beyond the city or Inner West to compete, performing in front of others, serving the community, or accepting a new challenge.

Co-curricular participation builds qualities that matter in life after school - resilience, humility, teamwork, discipline, courage and respect. Boys learn to win with grace, lose with dignity, support teammates, listen to coaches and staff, respect opponents and officials, and recognise the value of giving back to something larger than themselves.

Our Catholic faith strengthens this shared sense of purpose. Across the St Patrick’s community, we believe each person is called to use their gifts in service of others. Co-curricular life helps students live this out through encouragement, respect, gratitude, pride and service. It strengthens the connections and values that sit at the heart of our school.

School spirit is built when students are present for one another. When students commit fully, they help create a culture where belonging is real, pride is shared and the College community is brought closer together.

Compulsory co-curricular involvement is therefore about formation. It teaches students to honour commitments, respect others, serve generously and represent St Patrick’s College with pride. We ask our students to be involved because we know the value it brings. We ask them to keep showing up because that is how character is built, relationships are strengthened and community is formed.

Congratulations to all students attending the presentation nights for Chess, Football, Rugby, Tennis and Junior School Sport this week. We also wish the very best of luck to our athletes competing at the ISA meet next Tuesday 15 September. Your commitment, effort and contribution to St Patrick’s College are significant, and sincerely appreciated by the whole community.
