29th July - I had the pleasure of Miss Lucia’s company and 22 Year 10 students when they went to Vline in the city to undertake Beacon Foundation “Work Readiness” program. Here is what one of our student’s had to say about this program.

"From experience, most of the employment education held by adolescents at this age – writing resumes and the like – has been developed through a combination of trial and error and internet research. It is for this reason the Beacon Foundation’s Work Readiness program is so beneficial, because not only do we receive a formal coaching in job seeking, but we also have the ability to engage with our learning in an active manner; aspects like the Question-and-Answer panel and mock interviews immediately come to mind, where one can build competence in a risk-free yet exceptionally interactive environment. That degree of reciprocation and feedback, along with many other things, made it very valuable.

Thank you for echoing what many of our students said.  We thank the Beacon Foundation’s Matt Phyland, Clare and Phil (Facilitators) for all their support."

30th July  – On this day, I had the pleasure of Mr Murray and our Student Teacher Lennon and Year 10 students – Pathways and Mainstream when 18 students visited Cummins in Scoresby - another Beacon Foundation “Work Readiness” program.  Our students were very impressed by the various positions their Mentors spoke about and supported them in finding out their future pathways based on their skills and interests.

4th August – Global Literacy students in Year 10 and Mrs Stenning and I travelled by coach to Schneider Electric in Notting Hill.  This was the first time we were meeting their staff through Beacon Foundation “Work Readiness” program.  Our students were very impressed by the various positions especially in Engineering and Clean and Renewable Energy that their Mentors spoke about and supported them in finding out their future pathways based on their skills and interests.

We were given the perfect industry tour of a multinational organisation.

6th August – Pizza and celebration of another Beacon Foundation “Work Readiness” program, this time held in Westall Secondary College and facilitated by Claire and Ms. FERNANDEZ.  Our students did mock interviews with City of Kingston staff and professionals from BP and NECA.

7th August – 19 of our Year 10 students visited AON in Melbourne with Ms. Herod.   Our students were remarkable in getting to the city by public transport and impressed the panel of Insurance Brokers, Lawyers and Paralegals with their questions and discussions about their future pathways.  They asked questions about the part that AI plays in the Insurance world.

20th August – 24 of our Year 10 students travelled to the city on their own to undertake Beacon Foundation “Work Readiness” program at Clayton UTZ where their Mentors were Lawyers and Paralegals.  The students asked insightful questions and held discussions about their future pathways. I thank Miss Collins for her assistance in getting this whole program organised.  I cherish the interaction at Year 10 and this fits perfectly into career pathways discussions in Years 11 and 12.

Thank you to our Education Support Staff Ms. Barb and Mrs Phung for all their support in chasing up excursion notes. These ladies are the movers and shakers.

On 30th July our Year 12 VCE cohort have had ACCESS Monash facilitate a lively workshop on applying to VTAC in order to gain entry into University or TAFE on completion of Year 12.

7th August Our Year 10 students undertaking Work Related Skills travelled to Carnegie to watch and learn from Hair Place, our fabulous Hairdressing Salon employer Mr Elio and across the road to the Vault to listen and learn from Barbering expert Mr. Peter Polyzos accompanied by Mr Gary Bottomley and myself.  The Vault has been around for 50 plus years and is testament to hard work and good service provided to customers that they keep coming back said Peter.   Hairdressers have to listen to their customers and yet choose a style that suits the person’s face.  Therein lies the challenge.  Happy customers tell other customers and your business grows.  Both these employers gave their time and spoke of their skills and tools of the trade which benefitted our young aspiring students.
