Scopriamo L’Italia – Discovering Italy

This term, students from Foundation to Grade 6 will be discovering Italy through our unit of work, Scopriamo L’Italia (Discovering Italy). This learning will connect with the school’s Term 4 Inquiry focus on History, as students explore Italy’s geography, history, culture, famous landmarks and food.

Students will discover some of Italy’s best-known places, including the Colosseum, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Pantheon, Vatican City and the canals of Venice. They will also learn about the city of Verona and the famous story of Romeo and Giulietta, as well as exploring Italian art, traditions and food.

Through stories, songs, games, pictures and creative activities, students will continue to develop their Italian language skills while learning interesting facts about Italy. They will practise using simple Italian words and sentences, such as Roma è la capitale d’Italia (Rome is the capital of Italy), L’Italia è in Europa e ha la forma di uno stivale (Italy is in Europe and is shaped like a boot) and Mi piace la pizza! (I like pizza!).

Activities will be adapted to suit each year level, giving all students opportunities to build confidence in speaking and understanding Italian while discovering the connections between language, history, geography, culture and everyday life in Italy.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

We've had a great start to Term 4 in PE, some fantastic weather has kept us outside and our students have been showing up effort and enthusiasm!

In Week 1, we hosted some awesome coaches from Preston Baseballers Cricket Club. They led some cricket sessions with all of our students and a lot of fun was had by all.

It was exciting to see many of our Sacred Heart students expanding their comfort zone and learning new skills. We have some budding cricketers, and several seasoned players too.

Thanks, John

STEAM

This week in STEAM we were lucky to have The Engineers Without Borders (Melbourne Uni Chapter) come to visit the Year 3/4 and Year 5/6 classes.

Jocelyn, Louise and Nicholas told us a bit about themselves and how this group looks at how they can work towards solutions to support the communities in our World. Some examples of Engineers are Biomedical, Civil, Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical and Biometronic. They talked about the different areas engineers think about when working on projects: cost and affordability, physical environment, community and culture, mantenance.

Students then participated in a simulation of three Natural Disasters: Torrential Rain and Flooding, Cyclone and Earthquake. They used the Engineering Design Process to Imagine, Create, Test, Improve and Communicate. The Design Brief was to build a structure to survive the previously mentioned natural disasters with a budget of $45. They were given a price list for materials to use in their planning stage. In the testing phase their prototype was exposed to water, wind, and shaking. Some prototypes survived, some did not.

Students enjoyed working like an engineer and learning more about the different types of engineers.
