Ash Wednesday and
the Season of Lent
Yesterday, we gathered as a school community to celebrate Ash Wednesday, marking the beginning of the season of Lent.
During our liturgy, we spoke about the three key pillars of Lent: prayer, fasting and almsgiving. These are simple but powerful ways we can grow closer to God and care for others in the lead-up to Easter.
Here are some ways children can live these out at home:
Prayer
Saying a short prayer each night before bed
Praying for someone who is sick or in need
Taking a quiet moment to talk to God about their day
Fasting
Giving up a small treat or screen time for a set period
Choosing not to complain and instead speaking kindly
Being mindful and grateful for what they already have
Almsgiving
Donating part of their pocket money
Helping with chores without being asked
Showing kindness to a sibling or neighbour
Lent reminds us that small actions, done with love, can make a big difference.
Project Compassion
Throughout Lent, we support Caritas Australia, the Catholic Church’s international aid and development charity, through Project Compassion. The 2026 theme, Unite Against Poverty, invites us to stand together in supporting communities experiencing hardship around the world.
Our Justice and Service Leaders will distribute Project Compassion boxes to each family, and we encourage everyone to give what they can as part of their Lenten almsgiving. Boxes will be collected at the beginning of Term 2.
Together, may we journey through Lent with generous and compassionate hearts.
