Introducing Auslan Learning
at SMDP
This term, we are excited to begin teaching Auslan (Australian Sign Language) across the school. Auslan is a rich, visual language used by the Deaf community in Australia.
We hope to give students valuable opportunities to grow as communicators and thinkers, as well as open up new ways for students to understand and connect with others in authentic and meaningful ways.
Why Auslan?
Learning Auslan supports students’ intellectual, social and cultural development. It helps children:
build understanding and respect for the Deaf community and its unique cultural heritage
develop intercultural awareness and an appreciation of diversity
recognise that languages are living systems that shape how we see the world
reflect on their own identity and communication
strengthen critical thinking, adaptability and lifelong learning skills.
Auslan also opens up real‑life opportunities for students to engage with a wider community and to understand different perspectives, an important part of becoming confident, compassionate and effective communicators.
How will Auslan be taught?
Classroom teachers will lead the Auslan program using high‑quality online videos and resources designed for beginners. *Videos are presented by Deaf and Hard of Hearing people.
Students will take part in:
a 45‑minute Auslan lesson every fortnight in their classroom
a 15‑minute recap session the following week to reinforce key signs and concepts.
This structure allows students to learn new skills, practise regularly and build confidence over time.
Our learning goals
Through the Curriculum, students will learn to:
communicate using Auslan
understand the relationship between language, culture and identity
develop intercultural communication skills
appreciate the diversity of Deaf experiences and perspectives.
We look forward to seeing our students embrace this new learning area with curiosity, respect and enthusiasm. Auslan will not only broaden their communication skills but also deepen their understanding of the diverse world they are part of.
Look out for examples of our Auslan learning in upcoming newsletters!
