Ash Wednesday and Lent
This week the Catholic Church commences the season of Lent with Ash Wednesday.
Lent is the church season when we prepare ourselves for Easter. It is a time for spiritual reflection and fasting that prepares us to celebrate our redemption through Christ’s resurrection on Easter Sunday.
Ash Wednesday is a day of fasting and abstinence from meat. It is the day we receive ashes on our foreheads in the form of a cross as a symbol of penance.
We celebrated Mass with the parish community today and we all received a blessing when the ashes were placed on our forehead.
As we were reminded in today's Gospel, Jesus told his disciples, to pray, fast and give to those less fortunate than ourselves.
In his Homily, Fr Werner, suggested that we can use the season of Lent to do some maintenance on our spiritual lives, just as we maintain our cars with regular maintenance checks to keep them running smoothly!
Lenten Prayer
Almighty and Everlasting God,
You have given the human race
Jesus Christ our Savior
as a model of humility.
He fulfilled Your Will by becoming Man
And giving His life on the Cross.
Help us to bear witness to You
By following His example of suffering
And make us worthy to share
in His Resurrection.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ,
Your Son.
Amen.
