Teaching and Learning Update

Parent Teacher Interviews

Yesterday was a highlight for us as we celebrated our students as they continue to strive towards their personal best. The Parent Teacher Interviews provided a valuable opportunity to celebrate 6 months of student learning while strengthening the partnership between home and school. It was wonderful to see so many families engage in meaningful conversations with teachers about their child's progress, achievements and next steps for learning. Thank you to all parents and carers who attended and contributed to these important discussions. By working together, we can ensure our students are supported both at school and at home, helping them to achieve the very best outcomes.

Parent Helper Course

Yesterday, we were delighted to host our very first Parent Helper Course, with a wonderful group of parents joining us at 9:00am on Tuesday morning. Thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to the engaging discussions. It was fantastic to see families so invested in supporting student learning and developing a deeper understanding of how they can assist both their own child at home and other students within our classrooms. The session generated thoughtful conversations around reading, learning and the important role that parent volunteers play in our school community.

For families who were unable to attend, there is still an opportunity to participate. A second Parent Helper Course will be held in Week 3 of next term, and we warmly encourage interested parents and carers to register. Bookings can be made via Compass through TryBooking, and it is not too late to secure a place.

Parents and carers who wish to volunteer in classrooms, support learning programs or assist with school activities are required to attend a Parent Helper Course. The session provides important information about our school procedures, expectations and effective ways to support students while volunteering. We look forward to welcoming more families to our next session and continuing to strengthen the partnership between home and school.

School Holiday Learning and Experiences

During the Parent Helper Course, one of our parents shared a wonderful suggestion for supporting children's learning over the school holidays, making regular visits to our local library. This sparked some fantastic discussion and served as a reminder that some of the most valuable learning opportunities are often available and free right within our local community.

As we head into the school holidays, I encourage families to take advantage of one of the greatest free learning resources available, our local libraries. Research consistently shows that children who continue to read during school breaks maintain and strengthen their literacy skills, vocabulary and comprehension. Reading also nurtures creativity, builds knowledge, develops empathy and fosters a lifelong love of learning. Even just 15–20 minutes of reading each day can have a significant positive impact on a child's learning.

Our local Yarra Plenty Regional Libraries offer far more than books. Throughout the holidays, children can participate in a range of engaging activities including STEM and coding workshops, LEGO® challenges, craft sessions and storytelling experiences. These activities help develop problem-solving skills, creativity, communication and confidence while making learning fun and engaging.

For families interested in attending holiday activities with their children, please note that many activities require bookings and children may need to be library members to participate. We encourage families to visit the library website to explore the full range of holiday activities on offer.

The Mobile Library provides a convenient way for families to access books and resources close to home. Children can browse a wide range of books and borrow items just as they would from a library branch.

Fridays: 3:00pm – 5:00pm

Whether your child is discovering a new favourite author, exploring topics of personal interest, participating in a workshop or simply enjoying the excitement of borrowing books, every library visit helps to build positive learning habits and supports continued growth as a learner.

Thank you to the parent who shared this wonderful idea during our Parent Helper Course. It is a great example of how, by working together and sharing ideas, we can continue to support our children both at school and at home.

Stay tuned for our Wollert Primary School Reading Challenge in Term 3, more details to be sent via Compass.

We wish our school community a safe, restful and enjoyable holiday break and look forward to another exciting term of learning ahead.
