Visits from the music world

Stef Torre (class of 2024) had their first song played on the radio when they were still at school. This was Stef's reaction the moment that happened.

In June Stef came back to talk to the current Year 11 Music students, as the Year 11s were getting ready for an assessment task that will involve each of them composing their own piece, recording it and submitting it to Triple J Unearthed.

Over the past 18 months, since the alumni program started at the school, we've had several alumni visits with a musical theme.

Earlier this year we welcomed back Jules Sheldon (class of 2010), who shared practical tips about making a living from music. Jules's15-year+ career has included being a promoter, music facilitator, recording artist, touring musician and life music venue booker.

The first musical alumni visit as part of the new alumni program was in July last year, when Lev Whitelaw (class of 2022) came back to chat to current music students about the audition process for the Bachelor of Popular Music course  at Monash University.

That was followed by the return of The Robbies, a queer punk-alternative band the started at Swinny. The band (whose members are all from the class of 2023) headlined the school’s first Big Day Out last year.

The Big Day Out, which also featured talented musos from the school, was a celebration of live Australian music. Preparations are currently under way for the second Swinny Big Day out on 5 August.
