Head of Senior School
The past fortnight has been a wonderful reflection of the breadth of life in the Senior School, with our students embracing opportunities across sport, music, leadership, wellbeing and learning.
Celebrating Our Students
Week 5 finished on a particularly high note with our Whole School Music Concert. It was wonderful to see so many students sharing their talents and performing with such confidence. Events such as these are only possible because of the commitment of our students and the many staff who rehearse, organise, encourage and support them behind the scenes. Congratulations to everyone involved in making the evening such a success.
There was also plenty to celebrate on the sporting field, with two BMGS teams claiming premierships in the ISA Finals. Our 2nd XI Girls Hockey team became joint premiers after a nail-biting final. Going into the match as underdogs, the girls demonstrated enormous determination and simply refused to give up. It was an outstanding team performance and a wonderful example of resilience in action. Congratulations also to our 13s Boys Football team, who secured a fantastic win in their final. We are incredibly proud of both teams and all of our students who represented BMGS throughout the winter season.
A Day of Hope
Week 6 began with our Day of Hope, led by renowned youth speaker Glen Gerreyn. Glen worked with students across Years 7-12, encouraging them to think deeply about hope, resilience, purpose, courage and the choices they make for their future.
One of the great privileges of working in education is that our responsibility extends well beyond academic achievement. We want our young people to leave BMGS with the confidence, character and sense of purpose to navigate both the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead. The Day of Hope provided an important opportunity for students to reflect on who they are, where they are heading and the mindset they bring to that journey.
A sincere thank you to Amal Siorokos and Danielle Pearson for their work in bringing this valuable experience to our school community.
Leadership and the Passing of the Baton
This fortnight also marks an important transition in student leadership. Our Year 12 House Captains led their final House Meetings in Week 5, providing an opportunity to reflect on their contribution before handing responsibility to our incoming leaders.
This week, we formally recognise our new student leadership team at the Leadership Induction Ceremony. Leadership at BMGS is not simply about wearing a badge; it is about service, character, responsibility and the willingness to positively influence others. I congratulate all students stepping into leadership positions and look forward to seeing the contribution they will make to our community.
At the same time, I would like to acknowledge our outgoing Year 12 leaders. They have served the Senior School with energy and commitment, and their willingness to contribute to school life has helped shape the culture our new leaders now inherit.
Looking Ahead
For our Year 11 students, attention now turns towards their upcoming Assessment Block as they approach the conclusion of their Preliminary courses. I encourage them to remain organised, seek assistance when they need it and maintain a healthy balance between study, rest and the many other commitments in their lives.
For Year 12, the weeks are moving particularly quickly. With Trial examinations now behind them, their final weeks of formal schooling are approaching. It is an exciting and emotional time, and I encourage our Year 12 students to make the most of these final moments together while continuing to prepare purposefully for the HSC examinations ahead.
Weeks 5 and 6 have reminded us again that education is about far more than what happens within the four walls of a classroom. Whether performing on stage, competing in a final, reflecting on hope and purpose, or stepping forward to lead others, our students continue to embrace the opportunities available to them and contribute to the rich life of our Senior School.
