STCPSSA Year 6 Representative Netball

On Wednesday 10 September, the Southern Tasmanian Catholic Primary School Sports Association (STCPSSA) held their annual Webb v Doran Year 6 representative sports afternoon at St Aloysius College.  The Doran teams were made up of students from Mount Carmel College, Corpus Christi, Immaculate Heart, John Paul II, Sacred Heart Geeveston, St Aloysius, St Brigid’s, St Cuthbert’s and St James.

Mount Carmel College was proudly represented by Tayler Barratt, Grace Moriarty, Ruby Ponsonby-Reeves, Bella Seeber-Peattie and Aagya Silwal. The students displayed excellent skills, a high standard of play, and great sportsmanship throughout the afternoon.

We also thank Prep Teacher, Miss Lisa Wheeldon, also kindly coached a Doran team.  After the matches, the players enjoyed a well-deserved BBQ generously provided by the St Aloysius College P&F.

Basketball Premiers

Congratulations to the Year 8 Division 2 Basketball team who were crowned Premiers, after a convincing win in the SSATIS Grand Final on Monday afternoon at UniGym. The team never looked troubled on their way to a dominant 52-18 victory over Eastside Lutheran College.  It has been a strong season for the team, who won all but one of their matches.  Their only loss coming against Eastside Lutheran in Round 7.

Congratulations to the team of Eliza Fleming, Scarlett Gilmour, Violet Grierson, Sophie Haremza, Matilda Mulcahy, Navya Rawat, Emma Sluis and Alex Varveris. Thank you to Bec O’Halloran for coaching the team for this season.

Well done also to the Year 7 Division 2 basketball team for their fantastic season. With a mix of new and experienced players, it was wonderful to see the team grow in confidence and combine so well as the roster progressed. After two significant losses, the team did an amazing job to bounce back and finish the season in 3rd place. Thanks to Mrs Wendy Wallis for her commitment and support as coach.

Looking ahead, new teams will represent the College in the upcoming High School Basketball Championships for Year 7/8 and year 9/10 competitions, to be played on 8/9 November.

SATIS Secondary Swimming Carnival

Last Tuesday, Mount Carmel College joined 18 other independent schools from around the state at the Hobart Aquatic Centre to compete in the SATIS Swimming Carnival.

Having already competed in the Southern event, the girls were now stepping up to the next level of competition.  With some Mount Carmel students unable to attend this event, it was wonderful to see other students’ join the team at short notice, and step out of their comfort zone, to ensure Mount Carmel was represented in every event.

Highlights included:

  • The Mount Carmel College team placed 7th in the Junior Girls Shield, from 16 schools.  Scotch Oakburn College were the winners.

  • Girls U16 were 3rd in the Pennant and U13 were 4th.

  • Lina Mahmoud, 3rd in U13 Freestyle

  • Matilda Forrest, 2nd in U16 50m Butterfly and 50m Backstroke and 5th in U16 50m Freestyle

  • Elsa Pearsall, 3rd in U16 50m Breaststroke

  • Ella Nosworthy, Elsa Pearsall, Matilda Forrest and Amelia Sing, 2nd in 4 x 50m Relay and 4th in U16 Medley Relay

  • Well done to the competitors that stepped up and swam in older age groups including Year 7 students Ruby Sproule and Indi Fraser in U14s, and Nellie Sing and Bonnie Johnston in U15s.

  • A massive thank you Audrey Smith (Yr 7) and Samantha Lowe (Yr 10) who came to the event as reserves.

With this event, the secondary school swimming season now draws to a close. Well done and thank you to everyone involved in the trials, training and carnivals.  The students did a fantastic job representing the College, whether they were competing in multiple events, just one event or supporting the team as a reserve.
