Switch Off, Recharge, and Refresh this School Holiday Break

As we reach the end of another busy school term, it is time to pause, take a deep breath and look forward to a well deserved break. School holidays are not just a time away from homework and early mornings, they are an important opportunity to recharge mentally, physically and emotionally.

Whether your break is packed with travel plans, family catch ups, or quiet days at home, the most valuable thing you can do is truly switch off from the school routine. Here are a few gentle reminders and tips to help you and your family make the most of the break:

  • Rest is Productive

After weeks of classes, assignments, and extra-curriculars, rest is not just important, it is essential. Make sleep a priority. Sleep helps our brains consolidate learning, improves focus, and supports emotional wellbeing.

  • Take a break from screens

While it is tempting to spend hours scrolling or gaming, too much screen time can leave us drained. Try a “tech-free hour” each day and fill it with something offline, reading, drawing, cooking, going for a walk, or just chatting with family.

  • Let your mind wander

Not every moment needs to be scheduled. Downtime allows creativity to flourish. Let yourself be bored, it is often the birthplace of great ideas!

  • Focus on Wellness

Use the break to reconnect with what makes you feel good. That could be exercise, mindfulness, hobbies, or spending time in nature. Mental health matters, and holidays are a great time to check in with ourselves and each other.

  • Reconnect with Family and Friends

School holidays are the perfect time to strengthen relationships. Play a board game, share a meal, or go on a mini adventure. It is the little moments that often become the best memories.

As we step into this break, remember that switching off is not about doing nothing, it is about doing what restores us. I hope every student and family finds time to slow down, recharge, and return refreshed and ready for Term Four.
