Celebrating NAIDOC Week and Connection to Country

Recently, our school community came together to mark NAIDOC Week, an important occasion that took place during the school holidays. This year was particularly special as it marked the 50th anniversary of NAIDOC Week, celebrated under the powerful theme “50 Years of Deadly.”

Inspired by Living History

We were incredibly fortunate to welcome Michael McDonogh as a guest speaker at our school assembly. Michael is the great-great-grandson of renowned Aboriginal activist William Cooper, whose lifelong dedication to justice and advocacy helped shape Indigenous rights in Australia. Michael shared inspiring stories of his family’s enduring legacy, offering our students a firsthand connection to Australia’s history and the spirit of leadership.

Growing Together: Our New Bush Tucker Garden

In addition to our assembly, our Indigenous students collaborated with students from the College to plant a brand-new Bush Tucker Garden on our school grounds.

This hands-on initiative was made possible with the generous support of the Sutherland Shire Council and their Aboriginal Education Officer, Graham Avery, who guided the students in selecting and planting native flora traditionally used for food and medicine. We look forward to watching the garden flourish—and hopefully tasting some of the bush foods in the seasons to come!
