Poetry
It has been another productive and engaging few weeks in Year 3/4, with students demonstrating creativity, curiosity and perseverance across all areas of the curriculum.
In Reading and Writing, students are concluding their unit of work on poetry. Throughout the unit, students have explored a variety of poems from well-known Australian authors, including Waltzing Matilda by Banjo Paterson, Dog Days by Elaine Harris and Summer Rain by Phil Cummings. As they studied each poem, students identified and discussed poetic devices such as rhyme, rhythm, imagery, personification and descriptive language, while considering how these features help authors create mood and engage the reader. The unit concluded with students writing and publishing their own haiku poems inspired by Australia. Students carefully considered the traditional 5–7–5 syllable structure while using vivid language to capture the unique beauty of Australian landscapes, wildlife and seasons. It has been wonderful to see the creativity and imagination students have demonstrated through their writing.
Our next Reading and Writing unit will focus on exposition texts, with students exploring persuasive writing within the context of protecting the environment. Throughout this unit, students will learn how authors present logical arguments, support their opinions with evidence and persuade their audience through carefully chosen language and text structures. Students will investigate a range of environmental issues before planning and writing their own persuasive expositions, developing their ability to communicate ideas clearly while encouraging critical thinking about important real-world issues.

Mathematics
In Mathematics, students have recently completed a unit on money, where they developed their understanding of making calculations involving purchases, change and everyday financial situations. Students practised applying addition, subtraction and mental computation strategies to solve practical money problems, helping them build confidence in using mathematics in authentic contexts.
We have now commenced a new unit on measurement, with a particular focus on length. Students are learning to estimate, measure and compare the lengths of a variety of objects using appropriate metric units and measuring tools. Through hands-on investigations and practical activities, students are developing accuracy while building an understanding of why measurement is an important skill in everyday life.
To further support students' mathematical learning, a Mathematics homework task will be sent home by the end of this week. This task is designed to reinforce classroom learning and provide students with an opportunity to practise the concepts we have been exploring at school. Students are encouraged to complete the activities at their own pace under the guidance and supervision of their parents or carers.
