Year 2
Welcome back to another exciting term in Year 2! I hope everyone enjoyed a relaxing break and had the opportunity to recharge over the holidays. We have a busy and engaging term ahead, filled with new learning opportunities, exciting classroom experiences, and plenty of chances for our students to continue growing in confidence and independence.
This term, we will be building on the wonderful progress made throughout the first half of the year. In Literacy, students will continue developing their reading, writing and spelling skills through rich texts and engaging learning experiences. In Mathematics, we will strengthen our number knowledge while exploring new concepts through hands-on investigations and problem-solving activities.
As always, thank you for your continued support. Regular reading at home, practising maths facts, and maintaining consistent routines all make a significant difference to your child's learning. I look forward to another fantastic term working together to support each student's success.
Literacy:
This term, our Literacy focus is on information texts, with our learning closely linked to our Science unit on Earth and Space Sciences. Students will explore how information texts are organised and learn to identify key features such as headings, diagrams, labels, captions and glossaries. They will develop their reading comprehension by locating and recording important facts before creating their own informative writing.
Our mentor texts this term include Walking Through Gagudju Country and The Lorax. These engaging texts will support students in developing an understanding of Earth's natural resources, how people use and care for them, and the importance of making sustainable choices. Through reading, discussion and writing, students will deepen their knowledge while building the skills needed to communicate information clearly and effectively.
Maths:
In Mathematics, students are developing their skills in gathering, organising, representing and interpreting data. They have collected information through surveys and investigations before presenting their findings using tables, picture graphs, bar graphs and dot plots. Students have learnt how to interpret data displays by asking and answering questions, identifying patterns, and comparing results.
We have also been exploring place value by working with three-digit numbers. Students are learning to read, write, represent and partition numbers while developing an understanding of the important role of zero as a placeholder. Through hands-on activities and problem-solving tasks, students are building confidence in recognising the value of each digit and using place value to support their number knowledge.
Science:
This term, our Science learning focuses on Earth's natural resources. Students are exploring the idea that Earth's resources are precious natural treasures that provide us with the materials we need to live. Through engaging discussions, videos and hands-on investigations, students will identify a range of natural resources and learn how to categorise them.
As part of their learning, students will explore their local environment, observing and recording the natural resources they discover. They will then organise and compare their observations, making connections between the resources we use every day and where they come from. This unit also links closely with our Literacy learning, where students are reading information texts such as Walking Through Gagudju Country and The Lorax to deepen their understanding of caring for our environment and using Earth's resources sustainably.
