Foundation News
Literacy
Literacy In Literacy, we have been learning about digraphs and have explored the digraphs ‘ck’, ‘ss’, ‘ff’ and ‘ll’. Students have been practising blending these sounds to read words such as kick and fuss. In Writing, we have been constructing short, simple sentences based on stories we have listened to in class. Students have identified the beginning, middle and end of stories and have retold key events in sequence.
Numeracy
In Numeracy, we have been learning about addition through number stories. Students have used hands-on materials, such as counters, to model and solve addition problems. They have also enjoyed creating their own addition number stories and sharing them with their peers.
Religion
In Religion, our focus has been 'Our Bible'. Students have been exploring a variety of Bible stories and developing their understanding of the Bible as a special and sacred book for Christians.
Inquiry
In Inquiry, we have been learning about Visual Arts. Students have explored the importance of colour in artwork and how colours can be used to express different emotions and feelings. Over the coming weeks, we will investigate a range of visual art techniques and explore how visual art is expressed across different cultures.
At home you could reinforce learning by:
- Read a story with someone at home. Talk about what happened at the beginning, in the middle and at the end of the story.
- Practise writing all your letters using lower case letter formation.
- Create your own number story and draw a picture to match. For example, Kate had 4 apples and Beth had 6 apples. How many apples did they have altogether.
Write the below sentences independently:
- I am at the pot.
- We are in the sand pit.
The mess on the mat was from the dog.
- Create your own sentence.
- Ensure your sentence begins with a capital letter, ends with a full stop and has spaces between your words.
Year 1 News
Literacy
In Literacy, students have been learning about spelling using 'aw’ as in claw and ‘au' as in sauce. We have also revised the use of the bossy e. We have also been planning how to write a report about a bird.
Numeracy
In Numeracy, students have been learning to sequence events using the language least and more. We have been sequencing multiple events across a day.
Religion
In Religion our topic is ‘Daily life in Jesus' time'. Students have been connecting Jesus' life to their own experiences. They have drawn a picture to compare their family to Jesus' family.
Inquiry
In Inquiry our topic is 'Visual Arts'. Students have been exploring a variety of art techniques from different cultures, gaining an appreciation for diverse artistic traditions and creative expression.
At home you could reinforce learning by:
Literacy
- Find words in your take home reader with the letters áw’ and 'au'.
- Practice putting the tricky words, about, ask and our into sentences.
- Listen to your child read their reader each night.
Numeracy
- Ask your child to draw or write 4-5 things that they do after school. They can sequence the events from what happens early to late.
- Talk about events that happen during the day. Encourage them to use sequencing language to order the events.
Year 2 News
Literacy
In Literacy, during spelling, we have been exploring the trigraphs ‘eer '(cheer), 'ear'(near), 'air'(hair), 'ear' (bear) and 'are' (beware).
Grammar
During grammar, the students have been learning about noun groups. A noun group is made up of a noun along with other words, such as a, an, and the, that add more detail and make writing more interesting and descriptive.
Comprehension
During comprehension, the students have been reading texts and using the strategy of inferring to describe how the characters feel in the story.
Mathematics
In Mathematics, the students have been learning to solve addition and subtraction problems involving regrouping using MAB blocks and number lines to develop their understanding of place value and number operations.
Religion
In Religion, our focus has been ‘Daily Life in Jesus' Time. Students have been exploring what life in Nazareth was like at the time of Jesus and where possible making links to their own life experience.
Inquiry
In Inquiry our topic is 'Visual Arts'. Students have been exploring a variety of art techniques from different cultures, gaining an appreciation for diverse artistic traditions and creative expression.
At home you could reinforce learning by:
Literacy
- Write sentences using a noun and one or two adjectives to describe the noun.
- Listen to your child read their reader each night. When reading, students could practice using the ‘inferring’ strategy to describe how the character is feeling.
- Students are to practise reading and spelling the following ‘tricky’ words (only, through, every).
Numeracy
- The difference between two numbers is 5. What might the two numbers be?
- Add together two numbers, each with two digits. The answer is 67. What could the two numbers be?
Year 3 News
Year 4 News
We have had a wonderful start to Term 3, and it has been fantastic to see our Year 4 students return with such positive attitudes towards their learning.
Students have settled into the new term exceptionally well and have quickly re-established classroom routines. They have approached new learning experiences with enthusiasm and are continuing to demonstrate resilience, independence, and a willingness to challenge themselves.
Below is an overview of what we have been learning across the curriculum, along with some suggested activities to support learning at home.
English
In English, students have begun exploring our new class novel, Storm Boy. Through our novel study, students are developing their comprehension skills by making predictions, identifying key ideas, and discussing characters, settings, and themes.
Students are continuing to strengthen their spelling knowledge through the SpellEx program while also developing their writing skills through information report writing. A focus has been placed on expanding sentences by adding descriptive detail and using summary sentences and note-taking strategies to identify and record important information from texts.
To further support reading development, students have been participating in paired reading activities, practising their reading fluency with a partner to build accuracy, expression, and reading speed.
Numeracy
In Numeracy, students are developing their understanding of multiplication and division involving one-digit numbers. They are learning to apply efficient vertical algorithms to solve problems accurately and are building confidence in explaining the strategies they use.
Religious Education
In Religious Education, students have begun exploring the unit Identity and Self. Through discussions and reflective activities, they are considering what makes each person unique and exploring how their gifts, strengths, and relationships contribute to their identity.
Science
In Science, students have commenced their new unit on Motion. They are investigating how objects move and exploring the different forces that influence movement through hands-on investigations and observations.
Humanities
In Humanities, students have begun learning about Australia's history by exploring the lives and cultures of First Nations Peoples prior to European settlement. They are also investigating the establishment of the first British colony and considering the different perspectives and experiences of the people involved.
At Home You Could Reinforce Learning By
Independent Reading
Continue encouraging your child to read for 10–20 minutes each evening. Reading aloud to a family member or discussing what they have read helps to strengthen comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency. We are aiming to increase reading speed this semester.
Reading Fluency
Practise rereading familiar texts to build reading speed, accuracy, and expression. Taking turns reading with a family member is an excellent way to support fluency development.
Spelling
Support your child's learning by practising their weekly SpellEx words and discussing common spelling patterns they notice in everyday reading.
Information Reports
Encourage your child to research a topic of interest and record key facts using dot points before turning their notes into informative sentences.
Mathematics
Continue practising multiplication and division facts at home. Quick recall of basic facts helps students confidently apply vertical algorithms and solve more complex mathematical problems.
