St Anne and St Joachim

~ The Grandparents of Jesus ~

This weekend, on 26th July, the Church celebrates the beautiful Feast of Saint Anne and Saint Joachim, the grandparents of Jesus and the parents of Mary.

Although very little is written about them in Scripture, the Church has long honoured Anne and Joachim as faithful people who loved God deeply and nurtured Mary's faith from a young age. Their quiet example reminds us that faith is often passed on through the love, encouragement and witness of family.

As a school community, this feast provides us with a wonderful opportunity to pause and give thanks for the grandparents and older people in our lives. Grandparents hold a special place in our families. They share stories, wisdom, traditions and unconditional love, helping to shape the values and faith of future generations.

Pope Francis often spoke about the invaluable role grandparents play in our families and society. He reminded us that they are the living memory of our families and that young people and older generations need one another. Their love, experience and faith are precious gifts that should be cherished.

At St Brendan's, we are grateful for the many grandparents who support our school community through their prayers, encouragement and the love they show our children. May the example of St Anne and St Joachim inspire each of us to nurture faith within our own families and to treasure the special relationships we share across generations.

As we celebrate their feast day, let us keep all grandparents, especially those who are unwell, alone or have gone before us, in our prayers.
