Junior School

你 好 (ni hao) Foundation, Year 1 and Year 2 families,
This week in Foundation, we have been busy developing our skills in Phonics, Writing and Maths! We have been working hard, showing persistence and life-long learning!
In Phonics, we have been learning to blend, segment and spell CCVC and CVCC words, such as bring, truck, swim, black, step, lunch, dust and went.
We have also introduced the suffixes -s (making the /s/ sound) and -ed (making the /t/ sound) at the end of words.
- Suffix -s: Can mean ‘more than one’, such as cats and bats.
- Suffix -ed: Tells us something happened in the past, such as missed, mixed, kicked, rushed and wished.
Try this at home: Can your child practise adding the suffixes -s and -ed to different base words? Encourage them to read and spell the new words!
In English, we have been busy writing our persuasive speeches on the topic ‘The Best Thing About Me’. We have learnt that persuade means to convince someone by giving good reasons. Students have thought of three reasons to explain why their chosen character strength or quality is the best thing about them. They have demonstrated wonderful persistence, perseverance and independence while creating an extended piece of writing throughout the week. We have used sentence starters to support our writing, such as: '________ is the best thing about me because ________.’
We are incredibly proud of their efforts! These pieces of writing truly showcase how far our Foundation students have come in just 9 months of school! Next week, students will practise and present their speeches to their classmates. This is a fantastic opportunity to build confidence and public speaking skills, while bringing together all areas of English: Writing, Reading, Speaking and Listening.
In Maths, we have been exploring place value, learning how to partition two-digit numbers into tens and ones. We have also been investigating the difference between ‘teen’ and ‘ty’ numbers finding these numbers on 100/120 charts!
- Teen numbers (11–19) have 1 ten and some extra ones.
- ‘Ty’ numbers (20, 30, 40) are multiples of ten and have 0 ones.
Understanding these patterns helps us recognise, compare and order numbers from smallest to largest.
Try this at home: Using a 100 chart, can your child locate these numbers? 13, 31, 41, 14, 91, 19, 12 and 21.
Be sure to check out our Place Value Assessment on Seesaw to celebrate what your child already knows and to see any areas they may need further support with!
And… we can't forget… the countdown is ON!
Only 13 days until the Pevan & Sarah concert! That's less than TWO weeks away!
We have been busy practising our songs and are getting VERY excited! We can't wait! Full school uniform is required on the day of the concert!
Have a lovely weekend!
