THE VILLAGE

The Village: Supporting Student Wellbeing Together
At Korumburra Secondary College, The Village continues to highlight the ways we support our students to grow not just academically, but personally. This week, we’re recognising the fantastic effort shown by our students and connecting this to an important wellbeing concept: self-esteem.
A Great Effort in NAPLAN
We want to acknowledge how proud we are of our Year 7 and Year 9 students for the way they approached this year’s NAPLAN assessments.
Across the testing period, students demonstrated focus, resilience, and a willingness to give things a go. All qualities that matter far more than any single result. NAPLAN can sometimes bring added pressure, but our students handled the experience with maturity and a positive attitude.
What stood out most was the effort students put in: showing up prepared, staying engaged, and persisting even when tasks were challenging. These are the habits that underpin long-term success, both in and beyond the classroom.
Evidence in Focus: Building Self-Esteem
This week, we’re linking back to the Pop Culture Parenting podcast, which explored self-esteem through the movie Pretty Woman. The key message from the episode is that healthy, secure self-esteem is built through effort, not outcomes.
Rather than focusing purely on results or comparisons, young people benefit most when we:
Recognise their effort and persistence
Value the process of learning and improvement
Identify opportunities to highlight the process rather then outcome
This message strongly aligns with what we’ve seen during NAPLAN. When students focus on doing their best and engaging with the task in front of them, they build confidence in their ability to learn; regardless of the final score.
Why This Matters
Helping students develop a strong sense of self-worth is key to their wellbeing. When young people understand that effort is something they can control, it empowers them to take on challenges, bounce back from setbacks, and continue striving to improve.
We’re proud of the way our students applied themselves this week, and they should be too.
