Year 10 Genetics Investigations

Year 10 Genetics – Mitosis and Phenotype Investigations

Our Year 10 Science class recently explored genetics through two engaging activities: an Oreo mitosis investigation and a phenotype survey. Using Oreo biscuits and sprinkles, students modelled the stages of mitosis to better understand how cells divide and reproduce. The hands-on activity helped bring complex biological processes to life in a fun and memorable way.

Students also investigated inherited traits by surveying classmates to identify who could roll their tongue, taste PTC paper, and had attached earlobes. By collecting and analysing class data, we explored how traits can be passed from one generation to the next and discussed the role of dominant and recessive alleles. These activities gave students a practical understanding of genetics while encouraging teamwork and scientific thinking.
