Principal's Message
To Strive, To Seek, To Care with HEART

Dear Families and Friends,
Loss of a Legend
We started this week with the sad news of the passing of Jan Heaslip OAM, former Chair of the Advisory Council of St Philip’s College and Life Governor. Jan was a pillar of our community, mentored by our College founder, Reverend Dr Fred McKay.
Jan was instrumental in shaping the history of our school. She served on the selection panel that appointed Chris Tudor as principal when St Philip’s was still a residential hostel, later seeing him become the very first principal of our day school.
Of the many stories celebrating her impact on our facilities, a favourite remains her negotiation with the NT Chief Minister for the construction of The Minnamurra Hall. Jan and Chris asked the Chief Minister for a government subsidy of $1 million if the school could match it. The Chief Minister agreed fully believing the goal was out of reach. When later invited to officially open the hall, he graciously admitted to the audience that he had completely underestimated the determination of the St Philip’s spirit.
While Jan’s one disappointment was that her own children had to attend boarding school ‘down south’ before our day school opened, she was overjoyed that her grandchildren were able to experience St Philip’s firsthand. We will always be profoundly grateful for Jan’s selfless devotion to expanding educational opportunities for young people across Central Australia. Our deepest love and prayers go out to her family during this sad time.
Orientation Week
Last week we warmly welcomed over 100 students from Years 6 and 7 for our Orientation Week. It was a wonderful opportunity for our incoming cohorts to explore our learning spaces, experience senior classes, and get a feel for the College. I want to extend my sincere gratitude to the dedicated staff members who supported and guided our new students throughout this exciting transition.
SACE Exams
This week marks the commencement of Stage 2 SACE exams for our Year 11 and Year 12 students. Year 11 internal exams are running concurrently.
Please help support your young people during this demanding period by ensuring they eat well, rest adequately, and maintain perspective. It is worth reminding them that exams are simply reflection points - they do not measure innate intelligence, character, or real-world capability.
Finishing Strong
As the term winds down to its final four weeks, let us focus on finishing this academic year with strength and purpose. I encourage everyone in our community to stay positive, support one another, and continue prioritizing personal wellbeing.
Warm regards,
Leslie Tilbrook
