Dear Parents, Students and Friends of St Virgil’s,

Planning Pathways for 2027

Our recent Year 8 and 9 Subject Selection Evening provided an important opportunity for families to look ahead and consider the learning choices available for next year. It was pleasing to see students and parents taking time to speak with Heads of Department, ask questions and think carefully about how individual strengths, interests and aspirations can shape future pathways into senior secondary education. The evening reflected the value of informed decision-making and the importance of students beginning these conversations early.

I extend my thanks to Mr Rohan Mitchell, Director of Learning and Innovation, and Mrs Mary-Jane Anders for their leadership in co-ordinating the evening, along with the College Leadership Team and Heads of Department for their support. Students will receive a link to complete their subject preferences on Friday 28 August, with web preferences closing on Friday 11 September. Any student requiring further guidance is encouraged to speak with the relevant Head of Department or their Pastoral Care Teacher.

Mary Rice Day

Today, our College community paused to look beyond ourselves and stand alongside the young people and families supported by the Edmund Rice Centre in Kenya (formerly known as the Mary Rice Centre). 

Mary Rice Day continues to be one of the most important expressions of our identity as an Edmund Rice school, reminding us that education is at its best when it opens minds, builds compassion and leads to practical action. Through learning opportunities, therapy services, outreach programs, and prevocational and vocational training, the Centre provides life-changing support for young people with disabilities. It also works closely with families, assisting parents through skill development and income-generating initiatives such as bead work, tailoring and dressmaking.

Our fundraising makes a meaningful contribution to the ongoing operation of this remarkable facility, and I am grateful to all who contributed so generously. The day brought together students from both campuses through the legacy walk, shared lunch and buddy activities. More than simply a collection of activities, it was a visible reminder of what can be achieved when our students come together with purpose, energy and heart. I thank them for the spirit in which they participated and for the care they showed for a cause that sits so closely with the mission of St Virgil’s College.

Choomalaka Festival & Feast: A Celebration of Community

Preparations are well underway for the Choomalaka Festival for Years 7–12, to be held on Friday, 25 September, from 3.30pm – 7pm. Across the Senior School there is a growing sense of anticipation as students refine their performances and staff support the many moving parts that bring an evening like this to life. Our Parents & Friends Associations, together with a generous group of volunteers and supporters, have also been working behind the scenes to book food vans and help create a welcoming atmosphere for families and guests.

This event is always much more than a performance evening. It is a gathering point for our community and a celebration of the creativity, generosity and connection that characterise St Virgil’s College. We also look forward to the Junior School Music and Arts Show, with further details to be confirmed. I encourage families to support these events where possible and to enjoy the opportunity to share in the talent, hospitality and community spirit of our students and staff.

Staffing Update 

Mr Alex Woolcock, College IT Manager, has advised me of his intention to resign from his position to take up a new role. Alex has made a significant contribution to the College through his leadership of our IT services, and we thank him for his professionalism, expertise and support of staff and students.

Mr Chris Johnson, Maintenance Officer, will retire from his position on Friday 11 September after 30 years of dedicated service to the College. Chris has been a valued member of our community, and we acknowledge with gratitude the care, commitment and practical support he has provided over many years.

Mrs Alison Wignall will conclude her role as Japanese Teacher at the Junior School at the end of this term. The College is currently finalising arrangements for her replacement and will advise families in the coming weeks once these details have been confirmed.

There will be opportunities to thank Mr Woolcock, Mr Johnson and Ms Wignall properly prior to their departure. We extend our sincere appreciation for their service and contribution to the life of St Virgil’s College and will keep the community informed as recruitment arrangements are finalised.
