Year 5 Term 2 Overviews

Year 5 Term 2 Overview
Term 2 is a busy and exciting one in Year 5. Here is a short overview of what we will be focussing on.
English
Throughout Term 2 in English students will engage with a range of different types of texts for meaning. They will demonstrate understanding of texts, and identify textual aspects that represent details about historical, cultural and social contexts. Students will evaluate information and ideas in texts. Students will create written and spoken reviews and discussion texts for specific purposes. They will use grammar and punctuation, including complex sentences to provide additional information and description. Students will use precise vocabulary, such as specialist and technical terms, and experiment with language features, including figurative language.
Numeracy
In Maths during Term 2 students will use mathematical modelling to solve practical problems involving additive and multiplicative situations, including simple financial planning contexts. They will formulate mathematical problems, choosing operations and efficient mental and written calculation strategies, and using digital tools where appropriate, to solve them. Students will choose appropriate metric units when measuring the length, mass and capacity of objects. They will solve practical problems involving the perimeter and area of regular and irregular shapes using appropriate metric units.
SEL
SEL in Term 2 will focus on students exploring how and why emotional responses and behaviour change in different personal and social contexts. They will investigate the characteristics of an effective team and team roles including leadership roles, and strategies for reflecting on performance in a team role. Students will also participate in sessions based around strategies and skills for preventing, defusing or resolving conflict, considering possible causes and effects of conflict in different situations. They will also participate in the Projct Rockit incursion which focusses on navigating the online world together, exploring the opportunities and challenges of online communication, as well as providing strategies to navigate conflict online.
Inquiry
During Term 2 in Inquiry students are covering a social Responsibility unit which has a focus on History and Intercultural Capabilities. They will look at and explain the causes and consequences of the establishment of British colonies in Australia during the 1800s to 1901 and the contribution of significant individuals, events and ideas. Students will describe the perspectives, beliefs, values and attitudes of people and groups in Australia’s past using evidence from a variety of sources. They will explain how attitudes, beliefs and behaviours can influence intercultural experiences positively and negatively.
