Year 7 Term 2 Overviews

English

In Term 2, Year 7 students will deepen their understanding of multimodal advertisements and texts created for a specific purpose. They will explore and analyse a range of written texts, propaganda, and digital advertisements, learning to identify a variety of literary devices and persuasive appeals. Students will demonstrate their understanding through written responses and will become familiar with the Claim, Evidence, Reasoning, Link (CERL) writing structure. Towards the end of the term, they will be assessed on their knowledge of persuasive techniques by creating their own advertising campaign for a product. This task will not only encourage creative thinking but also require students to apply appropriate language features to effectively engage their audience.

Humanities

In Term 2, Year 7 students will explore how water and landscapes shape the world around them. They will begin by learning how water moves across the Earth through the water cycle, and why access to water is not the same everywhere in Australia. Using real data, students will investigate why some places experience drought while others have more reliable water supplies, and what this means for communities. As the term progresses, students will shift their focus to landscapes and landforms, learning how natural processes such as weathering, erosion, and deposition gradually shape the land over time. They will examine iconic Australian landforms and consider why these places are significant, not just environmentally, but culturally as well. Students will also explore Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives, building an understanding of how Country and Place are deeply connected to identity, story and care for the environment. Towards the end of the term, students will investigate natural hazards such as earthquakes and tsunamis, and consider how and why these events occur. They will evaluate how communities prepare for and respond to these challenges and think critically about how humans can manage the environment in more sustainable and respectful ways.

Math

Term 2 is an exciting time in Year 7 Maths. All of the topics in this term directly link to our Numbers Big Idea, as well as having lots of real world connections for students after school. These topics include Decimals, Percentages & Ratios. Students will then complete exams, which will be their first major assessment block as secondary students. Exams will assess these Term 2 topics, along with topics covered in Term 1 such as fractions, integers and ratios.

After exams, we ensure the same rigour continues so that all students are learning right up until the end of term. We enter into a Data & Statistics unit at that point, which equips students with the skills they need to manage the various data points they encounter in life.

Science

This term in Year 7 Science, students will be exploring and developing their understanding of cells and microscopes. Throughout this unit of learning, students will investigate the idea that all living things are made of cells and learn how specialised cell structures support the function and survival of living organisms.

Students will compare plant and animal cells and identify the role of key organelles, including the nucleus, cell membrane, cytoplasm, mitochondria, chloroplasts and vacuoles. They will also develop practical inquiry skills by learning how to safely use and care for compound light microscopes, prepare slides, make careful observations and record their findings using labelled scientific diagrams.

As part of this unit, students will work towards earning their Microscope Licence by demonstrating safe, responsible and accurate use of microscope equipment. These skills and concepts will support students in building a strong foundation in cellular biology and prepare them for future learning in biology, body systems, genetics and ecology.

Design and Technology

Building on the skills and knowledge gained in the previous term which introduced students to basic hand tools, measuring, marking and cutting, for Term 2 students will focus on precise measurement, marking and cutting skills. Students will also be introduced to chiselling and develop safe and correct habits. This will be achieved by embarking on a project to build a scissors holder which requires students to hone in their aforementioned skills.

Students will retain emphasis on cleanliness and safety in the wood tech workshop. The importance of safe work habits and attitude will continue to be reinforced.

At the end of the term, students will be able to bring their completed project home and share their achievements.

Food Technology

In Term 2, Year 7 students will explore a wide range of culturally significant dishes while deepening their understanding of food properties, healthy eating, and ethical food practices. This term places a strong emphasis on learning about the cultural origins of meals—where they come from, how they are traditionally prepared, and their significance within various communities. Students will cook a variety of sweet and savoury dishes including Chow Mein from China, Shish Tawook wraps from Lebanon, Chicken Biryani from India, Sabaayad and Suqaar from India, homemade Tim Tams (Australia), Burritos from Mexico, and spaghetti bolognese served with garlic bread and parmesan from Italy.. Alongside the practical work, students will be focusing on the properties of food and how they impact preparation and presentation, the importance of designing meals that support healthy eating, and ethical considerations in food production such as sustainability, food waste and  cultural respect. Throughout the term, students will continue to develop their kitchen skills, work collaboratively, and reflect on how food connects people, cultures, and values around the world.

Health

In Year 7 Health this term, students will explore relationships, communication, and personal identity through the lens of online safety. They will develop an understanding of what a digital footprint is, how online interactions can impact wellbeing, and strategies for staying safe and respectful in digital environments. Students will also learn how to respond to challenges such as cyberbullying and practise making safe, responsible decisions online.

PE and Interschool Sport

In Year 7 Physical Education, students will begin with a focus on net and wall activities, developing skills such as serving, rallying, and positioning. They will explore simple tactics and build confidence through modified games. Students will also complete a series of fitness tests, learning how to measure and track their own fitness and set personal goals for improvement. In Interschool Sport, students will participate in Soccer, AFL, Badminton and Table Tennis.

Visual Art

Visual Arts students will build on the elements and principals studied in Term 1 and apply their understanding to the medium of printmaking. Students will research artists’ and look at artworks and exhibitions from contemporary and historical periods focusing on how artists use elements and principals in printmaking, to develop and reflect on their own image making practices. Using their Visual Diaries to document their practice, they will be exposed to a variety of printmaking processes, and techniques: monoprint, gelli plate and collagraph prints. This unit will culminate in producing a finished edition of prints to be displayed at the celebration of learning.

 Performing Arts

In Year 7 Music, students will engage in a practical exploration of instrumental performance and ensemble skills. Throughout the term, students will rotate through a range of instruments including bucket drums, the drum kit, keyboard, guitar, and voice, developing foundational technique, rhythm, and coordination. As their confidence grows, students will begin to apply rehearsal strategies and collaborative practices to work effectively as a band. By the end of the term, students will demonstrate their ability to rehearse, refine, and present a group performance, showcasing both their technical skills and their capacity to collaborate as emerging musicians.
