Our students become MPs for a day

Five of our Year 11 Legal Studies students recently had the incredible opportunity to step inside Queensland Legislative Assembly Chamber and take part in the 2026 Legal Studies Youth Parliament at Parliament House.

Josie, Xanthe, Georgie, Alicia and Ava proudly represented our College, learning what it’s really like to be a Member of Parliament. From debating issues that matter to them, to speaking in the Chamber, the day was a hands-on look at how decisions are made in Queensland.

Our students took on a range of roles, including Youth Members of Parliament and Youth Sergeant-at-Arms, where they escorted the Acting Speakers into the Chamber with a replica of the ceremonial mace.

Throughout the sitting, students debated a mock Bill concerning the issue of electoral reform, with one amendment seeking to lower the voting age to 16 years old; as well as sharing their views and ideas for change in their school and local community.

It was a very successful day and gave students practical understanding of the passage of legislation in the Legislative Assembly.
