This week's strategies encourage a strong understanding of number. By learning about doubles and near doubles our children are supported in future learning through their automatic knowledge of how ‘like numbers’ can be applied.

Doubles lay the foundation for more sophisticated strategies and are often part of the number splitting strategy.

Sometimes described as double + 1 or Double - 1. This is an example of building on or extending  a known strategy. This process becomes very important as students learn to extend their number-facts to 20 and to adding 10s or 100s.
